Hello,

I currently have a HR20 and get local HD channels OTA without subscribing to the DirecTV HD package. I would like to add another recvier (HR21 PRO + AM21) but do not wish to add the HD package. I live in a high rise bulding and adding the capabilty to receive HD through my DirecTV recevier means spending $$$ I don't wish to spend as I lease at the moment. So the question is can I use the AM21 and receive OTA HD without adding the HD package from DirecTV (which would add nothing for me). Thanks in advance for the help...

The OTA channels are, (just that) over the air, they are free, they are not part of the Directv package. Directv does give you HD locals in some cases, but the OTA channels are just those that you would get if you had no provider for service and elected to use your rooftop antenna. The AM21 just allows your OTA channels to be displayed on your Directv guide screen.

In theory you do need the HD package if you want locals on the HR21 pro/AM21. I have not seen a post from anyone who has actually tried it without HD - I do know that the HR20 and the H20 will not give you OTA unless you have HD access.

It is my understanding that if you do not subscribe to the HD package you will be required to return all your HD equipment.
We have a HR10 they have called us, email me and sent us a letter to upgrade. We don't have any of D* HD channels. We watch mostly only OTA HD anyways. So If we finally do the "free upgrade", We want the same package we have now.

If that can't happen I'll just stick with the HR10 and see what happens next year when the new DirecTV TiVo comes out.

there are exceptions to this, in February 08 as a retention issue to keep me they sent me, and activated, an hr20-100 while I had an older non-hd package. I did upgrade to hd 5-6 weeks later though.

this is probably a rare exception, but figured I would mention it.

There IS a post on here that makes mention of the fact that D* rescinded that requirement. Not sure of the validity of that statement though.

You need to stick with your HR10. If you upgrade to the HR2x series you will have to add HD to your package.

Yes, but the AM21/OTA tuner in HR20s is controlled by Directv and thus they could disable it if there is no service/not the right service on the receiver.

If you currently have an HR20 and the OTA HD works from that receiver, there is no reason why the HD should not work from an AM21/HR2x receiver that you set up in a second room. Let us all know how it ends up working out for you!
