This is my first post on this site. This may be a stupid question to ask: I live in a town home neighborhood, and noticed that the neighbor across the street has a
DirecTV Slimline dish installed on the roof. His dish has 2 monopoles installed, I can only assume this is for wind load. I noticed that my Dish 1000.2 does not have monopoles installed.

Is this something that is required? Does the 1000.2 not have as much wind load as
the Slimline? I'm a little nervous because we do get 20-30Mph winds in our area.

I'm not certain what you're referring to as a "monopole." I'm guessing it is an added strut between the dish mast and roof?

I have 2 dish antenna's, mounted on the highest peak of my roof, and often have wind speeds here, in excess of 40mph. There's no buffer behind them, so they're fully exposed. They haven't moved in over 8 years.

As long as you get a good solid mount between the base and roof, you shouldn't have any problems.

Thanks for the reply. I only mentioned monopole as that was what I was seeing in some of the DirecTV forums. The struts are what I was referring to. :D

Glad to hear you've had good luck with your dishes in high winds. I've never been a satellite subscriber before, always been tied cable. This is a whole new world for me. I've been happy with the picture quality and overall experience with getting E* so far. Just waiting for the first storm to hit to see how my install handles it. :)

I have seen the struts that you are talking about on the D* dishes, they are a little bigger so I guess that is why they need them. I know that my 1000.2 does not have them and I don't think that I have ever seen one that does. Hopefully you have nothing to worry about but, have not seen alot of people in here posting about the 1000.2's getting blown around real easy.

That's what I was hoping. Not seeing posts on something like that is probably a good thing.

I just took a peek in my attic to see how many bolts he had used to attach the base to the roof, and I saw 4 bolts (with about 3 inches showing through the roof) with nothing attached into the roof joists/studs. Is that normal? I probably should have asked him when he was still installing. He seemed like he knew what he was doing, didn't take him long to install on the roof. He did do a neat job of tacking the cable and making it look very clean on the roof and in my "demark".

I think that it is normal to not have anything on the back of those bolts, I know that when I got my 1000.2 upgrade, the installer did not go into the attic (since all the cable was already run). I doubt that any of them put nuts on the backside of the bolts but, maybe one of the installers could enlighten us.

Both mine have 4ea 4 x 3/8" galvanized lag bolts, mounted into only the shingles and roof sheathing, sealed with a clear silicone to keep water out.

Probably not. If it makes you feel any better i've had one of those dishes on my roof since I upgraded to HD back in November, it's survived winter storms and thunderstorms so far w/ no probs. Including one that had over 60 mph winds that blew shingles off a house behind me and toppled a kids swingset/slide/junglegym thingy at the house next door.

That does make me feel better; being in MN we get all the snow you could ask for and get the T-storms with 60 Mph winds. :) (So far only one of those this year)

The DirecTV Slimline dishes are *considerably* heavier (more than double) than a 1000.2, have a larger reflector with more wind resistance, and must be tuned with 10 times the precision that is required by Ku dishes, as they pick up the much narrower Ka band as well.

Solid Signal carries Slimline monopoles. They come with 2" rings for the Slimline mast, which are too big for most dishes, which use 1 5/8" poles.

Where can I get one of these monopole struts?
Call Dish and ask tech support for a set of mast support struts.

Your local dealer may be able to help as well. All 1000Plus dishes are shipped with the struts. Sometimes the installer just does not install them, for whatever reason.

I actually have 3 extra sets, but it will cost to ship them. If you call Dish they might send you a set of struts so you can avoid shipping charges.
