and screwed up all the settings. I have HD HD21 DVR and my little bichon sat on the tv (not DTTV) remote. I got the NO SATELLITE message and after pushing a few buttons got the picture back. This happened about a month ago and I noticed through the olympics, when the crowd was cheering (at the swimming, open ceremonies etc.) the commentary could not be heard - I guess that could be good!! Yesterday at the US Open, crowd was loud .... could not hear clearly the commentators. Question to you experts is what should everything be set at in the audio. Maybe this is the tv problem and not Directv. Also what has started happening writing on bottom on screen like CNN. FOX, is not showing up completely - that can drive one crazy. Thanks for any suggestion other than call in Geek Squad.

Steven it is an Insignia (Best Buy) 42" LCD HD 1080p TV. After writing this to you I remember the format is 480i.

Sounds like you have dolby digital turned on but you probably don't have a 5.1 speaker system with an A/V receiver that can decode dolby digital. If so then go to the audio setup and make sure DD is turned off.

Also sounds like maybe CC is turned on if you're seeing text on the bottom of the screen.

One thing you could do is do a reset all settings on the DVR, this will wipe everything out but it will set it back to factory settings which may help you out if you're not one that can troubleshoot this stuff.

Thanks for the information. CC is not on, it is though the TV screen is not large enough to accommodate the picture. I am talking about the scrolling of text on news programs etc. It is half showing only.

I set it to Original formal and all is fine - thanks. Waiting for a show with a crowd background to test the noise factor - looks like I shall test it this afternoon with the Finals of the US Open. Thanks so much. One more question - is my setting right at 480i? I am a little afraid to change it to 1080p which is what my TV says it is. Wish my husband cared a little about such stuff. He has his SD TV and he is happy.

I threaten to revoke his Westminister privileges, but he knows I'm a soft touch. The main solution is to scratch his tummy while watching a program.

Nick, just the settings were all messed up with the dog jumping on it - not chewed up

Sounds like he sat on the "FORMAT" button a couple of times on the TV remote and put it in "WIDE EXPAND" or some similarly named format. Cycle that button until the picture size returns to normal. Then it sounds like he sat on the CC (closed caption) button on the TV remote as well. You can cycle that button back to "OFF." Regarding the low audio, possibly this TV is one of those that has a dual level "MUTE" button, and he sat on that, too. Active little critter. Some TV's can also be set to display captions whenever the "MUTE" function is selected.

Finally, it sounds like your DirecTV receiver may not be set to display high definition resolutions, if your TV says "480i" while you're watching a program you know to be in HD. Make sure the 720p and 1080i resolution blocks are selected in the DirecTV receiver's set up menu:

I switched Dolby to OFF, changed Format from Cropped to PILLAR and my HD settings to include 1080i and 720p - so far so good. Thanks for all the help and I am sure you saved me a few bucks. Any one want a cute dog?:lol:

Yep, you were right HD resolutions were not set - just 480i.


One more question - should both the 480s be check marked and should NATIVE be on or off? Thanks for all the help with such a non-tech person.

Sounds like you've made good progress. Personally, I check all the blocks my TV can receive and use Native "ON." That makes the TV identify and process all the different resolutions. If you find that makes the channel changing too slow with your particular TV, Use Native "OFF" and push the RES button on the front of your receiver until the 1080i light is illuminated. Then the DirecTV receiver will convert all resolutions to 1080i before they get to your TV.
