I've read enough here at this forum and after my R-15 failed to record anything for seven straight days, I've decided I'm through with it.

So, I checked out ebay and found a reputable seller who was auctioning several refurbished Hughes SD-DVR40s. I won one of the auctions at $80. After that, I called DirecTV and inquired about a refund on my R-15...to my surprise they didn't argue it and are sending me a 'Recovery Package' (I guess its just a Fed-Ex shipping box to return the R-15) and automatically refunded my $120. I'm happy now!

I've read before that you need the serial ID's off of these boxes to make sure DTV can activate it...is that correct? Anyone had any nightmares with this process?

You won't have any problems activating your "new" Hughes DirecTivo, as long as the previous owner deactivated it and does not have an account balance against it. You might need a new Access Card from DirecTV (~$20), but sometimes they'll let you move the card from your old R15.

We had the SAME deal.. couldn't record anything.. or just little partial clips for a week! WAS SO MAD. Finally... decided to do a FULL reset.. knowing I'd lose everything I had on the drive...

Not ONE (bad) glitch after that day! and it's been over a month!

If you're dealing with a reputable seller they should be willing to provide the serial # of the IRD you are considering. Then you can call D* and they'll tell you whether or not there are any charges due against the unit.

I've sold several units over E-Bay and every buyer has been pleased. If you get the right CSR they won't even require you to buy a new access card.
