OK, so here's perhaps the dumbest question ever.

I'm getting set to dump my HD TIVO dvr and join the dark side (DTV DVR). Right now I get charged 4.99 for the hd tivo dvr. When I convert over, I'll get charged $5.99 for the DVR...so $1.00 diff. If I go ahead and get a second HD DVR to replace an old SD DVR, is therer a second $5.99 charge replacing the $4.99 i pay on the SD DVR now?

Please...hold your laughter!

The 5.99 DVR fee covers all DVRs on your account. If you have one or five DVR's it is still only 5.99. I hope that helps!

That 4.99 sounds like the additional receiver fee. I thought that DTV changed all DVR fee's Tivo or DTV DVR to 5.99 with the exception being the lifetime DVR folks.

I'm trying to figure out what it's gonna cost me to changeover from legacy (choice) HD service and older HD equipment...to choice extra. slimline dish, DTV DVRs and reg HD receivers.

I've been a sub since early 98 and usually work a nice deal IF I'M PREPARED with the numbers. I just sorta nudge the csr around a bit and the go to retention etc if I can't cut a fair deal. All I really want is to upgrade all my equipment, jump from tivo dvr to dtv dvr and essentially keep my costs the same (but for maybe a 6 / 12 month $10 credit somewhere).

Welcome to the forum.... :welcome_s

There is single charge to cover all the DVRs on the account.

However, there will be the $4.99 lease fee for each receiver (once know as the mirror fee and doesn't apply to the primary receiver).

You have your base package amount
Add HD service fee $9.99 for legacy packages
HD Extra (optional) $5.99
DVR service (covers however many DVRs you have) $5.99
Your 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc receiver adds $4.99 per receiver

Then you can start adding in premiums, sports packs, etc.

oh yeah...and when I first signed up with tivo...i bought "forever" service for only $200 (i think).
Is the receiver you're talking about a "DirecTV TiVo DVR"? (In other words, is it a DirecTV Receiver & TiVo unit all-in-one, or is it a 'standalone' TiVo?)

If it is a DirecTV/TiVo combo box, and you paid for Lifetime Service, then you should be GRANDFATHERED and should not pay a DVR fee, even if you replace it with a new HD DVR. Check your DirecTV bill - does it say "DIRECTV DVR Service Lifetime"?

See Section 7 of the DirecTV Customer Agreement:
http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/global/contentPage.jsp?assetId=P400042

If you paid a "lifetime service fee," you will not be charged a fee for your DIRECTV DVR Service as long as you maintain television programming service from DIRECTV on the same account. If you disconnect your DIRECTV television programming service and later reconnect on the same account, your DIRECTV DVR service will be reconnected and you will not be charged a fee for DIRECTV DVR Service.

I'm pretty clear on most of the $ stuff now...just wasn't certain if it was $4.99 for the unit and another $5.99 per each additional DVR.

If I'm gonna switch out...and since DVR service will only cost $5.99 for everything...then is the smartest thing to do just get all DTV DVRS for all 4 locations in the house?...and trade on my 98 subscriber date for as much free hardware as possible?

Aside from the initial acquisition cost, if you have one DVR on your account, there's no reason NOT to have all the other receivers be DVRs also.

Again - if what you paid for above was a Lifetime subscription for a DirecTV/TiVo combo box, you won't even be subject to the $5.99 DVR fee. And if they try to convince you that you will, refer the CSR to the Customer Agreement, and quote verbatim from Section 7 above. It's pretty cut-and-dry. I had an agent try to tell me that because I was changing from TiVo to DVR service, that I'd have to pay for it. I told them the agreement was clear about that. It clearly states that you will not be charged a fee for your DIRECTV DVR Service -- doesn't make any mention of TiVo!
