If it just started and if it is a clicking sound it may mean the hard drive is starting to have a problem. If you can not deal with the noise or if you start having any problems you may want to call DIRECTV and have it replaced.
The hard drives in the DirecTV DVR's are pretty quiet, especially in the R15-300 series where it is shock mounted on rubber washers. I can hardly hear the drive running unless I put my ear up to the box.
If your DVR has been quiet but suddenly is not, it sadly appears that the drive is dying. Get out the VCR or DVR recorder and back up your favorite recordings before it is too late!
