What would be the comparable dish price for the following Directv Package:
Choice Xtra + HD DVR
4 HD DVR IRDs
Whole-Home DVR

What technology would I lose?

The middle of next month Dish Network is reported to be making available its new Hopper/Joey units that can service 4 HDTV's with one Hopper and 3 Joeys connected. These 4 TVs will have access to 3 tuners in the Hopper plus anything that is already recorded on the Hopper.

There is no current pricing for this combo.

If you can wait 3 weeks or so you might get a very good deal on a new system

Look over the forums for "Hopper" and see all the descriptions for what these units can do - too much to cover in one post.

Here's what we know so far:

Choice Xtra ~ AT200 = $60 (AT250 is $70)
DVR Service = $6
Whole Home = $4
Joey (tunerless client) = $7 (each uses one tuner on Hopper for live tv)
Hopper (3 tuner server) = $7 (primary is free like it is on DirecTV)

You'll have to decide how many tuners you really need to serve all users in you house simultaneously (recording and live tv). Also must factor in PTAT where 6 networks are recorded in prime time using only one tuner.

For new customers 1 Hopper plus up to 3 Joeys are free. Programming is discounted $25/mo. for the first 12 months for AT200 or $30 for AT250. HD free for life with auto-pay.

PrimeTime Anytime is 4 major networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, & FOX) during the 3 primetime hours, on one tuner and makes them available to you On Demand for up to eight days. You can save your favorite On Demand content if you choose.

If you are looking for something cheaper than the above configuration, you could get a 722K and share the SD output among your secondary TVs.

America's Top 200 $59.99 (add $10 for AT 250)
DVR Service $6.00
TOTAL: $65.99

This doesn't include the $20 off per month for the first year deal that is going on right now. Also, if you wanted additional HD boxes, it would be $7 for each one and you wouldn't be able to watch DVR programming from your main receiver through this box. HD DVRs are $10 for each one and you still wouldn't be able to watch DVR programming from your main receiver (and vice versa).

You can play around with the configs at http://dish.com/packages. However, it doesn't include the pricing for the Hopper and Joeys yet.

Does the new hopper allow you to save certain prime time programs if you dont have time to watch them after the 8 day limit?
Yes it will allow you to mark programs to be saved for future viewing.
