Dual tuner in a AV Closet

887 Views 9 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  TBoneit
If I place a dual tuner DISH HD DVR in my AV closet, will I need two lines going to my tv to be able to use PIP? This is a new build home so I still have time to run the dual lines.

Thanks,

Depends on which dual tuner receiver you are referring to. Several of them can do pip with equal sized side by side pictures, this feature is built into them and do not require the tv being able to do it. Note: many of Dish's receivers need a good air flow to keep the cool. It is not a good idea to have some of these units in some closets (small with no venting). You may need to use some type of cooling system on these, if they overheat do start malfunctioning.
Better to have it and not need it than vice versa.

I would run 2 ethernet lines to the closet as well.
When it doubt, run the lines. Then run more. Run lots of them when it is easy to do so. Cable is cheap; labor to run that cable, especially after-the-fact, is not. If you're going to do the work anyway, it doesn't cost very much to pull a couple of extra cables at the same time.
Also better focus on cooling that closet. Couple of fans, some chilled water loops and a turbine in the roof ought to just about cover. ;-)

But seriously, if you are still designing the setup, don't forget cooling.

While I would certainly agree that it's better to run too much wiring than too little (every time!), I'm not sure the posters above really answered your question.

To do PIP with an E* HD DVR, you need to be running in single mode (both tuners dedicated to one TV). The PIP is generated internally in the DVR, and goes out over one HDMI or Component Video connection to the TV. There would be no need for two "lines" going to the TV in that case.

Now, if you want the TV to do the PIP, it's a little different. Your TV MAY be able to do PIP with two separate A/V inputs. In that case you COULD run HDMI or component for TV1 and Composite for TV2 (with the DVR in dual mode). Then you would use the TV remote to control the PIP.

Personally, I'd use the first method above.

Better yet, RUN CONDUIT. I ran 2" conduit between attic and underhouse crawl space. Then a run to the closet from attic and one to the crawl. AND audio, alarm, Video, cat5 home runs... never know what the future holds. this was 14 years ago and was a great idea
To the closet, you'll need at least one COAX from the "Wiring enclosure" or outside D-marc. Obviously 2 or 3 would be better. One will work as long as your getting a DishPro plus compatitble receiver. To the TV location, from the closet, your'll need either and HDMI cable or 5 coax cables. The 5 coax cables can be used for Component video and audio: each cable comprising the following: Red, Green, Blue (for Component video) and the other 2 for left & right audio. Simply connectorizing the coax and using a F to RCA adapter to connect to the TV, and vice versa to the receiver. Make sure you label the cables when pulling them.
Thanks all, that answers my question. And we do plan on collinbg the cabinet as well as drilling holes for good venting the the shelves
Keep in mind that for HD you will need to be able to run HDMI or component cables to the HDTV set the RF out jacks are only SD. Put the closet near the TV set.
