just received my second HD DVR a HR21-200. the first was a HR21-100 an the installer said it was new, and was shocked it even had all the cables in it. so today i get the HR21-200NC, how do i tell if its a refurb. looks brand new to me.

It probably is brand new. The "NC" means "no cables"; only receivers intended for retail sales have cables in them now. The "NC" receivers are normally delivered by installers who are supposed to be supplied with an assortment of cables, and are to use the best cable for your particular equipment.

If its refurbished, check the bottom of the receiver. Mine has a sticker "refurbished" under it.
I have had refurb electronics like cell phones and could not tell that they were refurbs. They act and look just like new. I just know they are refurbs because the agent told me so. I am not afraid of refurbs but I know that some can be bad just like new ones can.

Check the label behind the access card door or the label on the back. The "maufacture date" is usually stamped there and if it's 3 months or less you probably have a new unit.

Not all units will have that sticker. In the Tivo days they did, but I had to HR20 replaced and they had no sticker. I knew it was not new because of a few scratches on the back of the unit and under the unit.

no sticker behind card door or on the bottom, but closer look at the sticker on the back says mfr date of 8/5/08 so i'm thinking new
I think new as well. unless the times are anew, in which case we must think anew

They also put a reconditioned sticker where the void if removed sticker is on the case, on the back where you would unscrew the case to open it up.
Thats not always true, i have had three refurbs, or at least baxed as refurbs and only 1 has the sticker that you are talking about the other ones came with the void stickers. Maybe if the bench test reveals that the cover has to be taken off they use the refurb sticker?
