I just recently purchased a Phillips 3400 DVD-R (because of price point and also the component input that no other affordable DVD-R's had). I have my HR20 hooked up to my TV via HDMI and thought that by running the component output of my HR20 to the DVD recorder, it would produce far better results than S-video. No luck.

When I hook it up that way, I have sync and color issues. Any thoughts? I can't figure this one out. I obviously don't want to hook it up via any other connection if I can get something better.

I'll admit, I didn't play around too much with different connections (and I will when I get home)... I was thinking of lowering my resolution on the HR20 to 480P or 480i to see if that does anything, but I figure I might as well hookup s-video if i did that.... Do you think it's at too high of a resolution for the DVD-R since I don't see anything on the documentation of anything over 480P?

Any thoughts?

That is because your component OUTPUTS of your HR20 are pushing an HD signal, and your DVD-Recorder, probably can't accept an HD signal via those inputs.

S-Video would probably be the way to be able to have the unit displaying HD on the TV, but being able to record at the same time.

Earl, wouldn't setting the HR20 to 480i fix this? I'm pretty sure it would work over component as long as the output format was set to 480i.

So I guess I'll setup with s-video only since I don't want to set my HR20 to output 480i only. I wish there was a way to have output resolution independence on the HR20 (i.e. HDMI->1080i, Component->480i, etc... at the same time) :)

Does the HR20 output all at the same time, so that I can set my HDMI to my HD resolution, and still have the s-video active and output at 480i?

You know, I'm interested in doing the same thing. I've tinkered a little, and it seems like through the combination of TV settings and HR20 settings I can create an S-video feed that results in widescreen programming (at 480i resolution). I'm thinking of recording that feed on my DVD recorder to create anamorphic widescreen discs. Technically they won't be "really" anamorphic" as that is 704x480 and S-video is 640x480, but they will function the same and when I record widescreen material I can play it back in widescreen instead of pillar/letter/everything boxed.

If you try this first, shoot me a PM and let me know if it works for you.
