DVR fee with Premier package

A friend of mine who has the Premier package just receive his monthly bill from directv. It had a $5.99 DVR fee for this month and a retro active fee back to August for DVR service. I have not yet received my bill for this month to see if I have the same charge.

Is the DVR service no longer included in the Premier package?

If I log in and look at the packages and FAQ it says that it is. But if I go to the directv website without logging in the Premier package says "FREE DVR service for 4 months (reg. $5.99/mo.) with activation of a DVR-capable receiver"

DVR hasn't been included in the Premier package for over a year, or maybe just about a year, but if you had it before the change you are grandfathered in.

July 12th, 2007 is when the DVR services was removed from the Premier package unless you had it before then.
I just had the same thimg happen to me. According to DirectTV, something, they can't say what, changed on my account on 9/23 and the $5.99 charge is for the one TIVO that I have, not the DirectTV HD DVRs.

I went up the chain to Case Mgmt and they said there's nothing they can do about it - once the package was changed (it wasn't) - the system thinks that I'm a new subscriber (I've had the Premier Package or whatever its predecessor was since 1996) and there is no way to get the old package with the included DVR back.

I'm just about ready to turn to FIOS over this - does anyone have any suggestions?
IMO, you'd be nuts to go to FIOS because of $6 a month.

Agreed, I dont see how $6/mo makes you want to go to FiOS personally....
It's a matter of principle, not the $6 a month. If I'm "wronged" by a company, I'll walk.

I just don't understand how DirectTV can now charge me for something that has always been included in my package and state is no way to rectify the situation.
DTV says to me there is no grandfathering. I just got of the phone with them I did get them to credit my acct for a year for the 5.99/month

Us Dish customers have to pay $5.99 in all but one package. Ain't nickle & diming wonderful?
Before long we will pay $5.99 per DVR instead of one fee per account. It's only a matter of time.

I doubt that. Alot of people would not pay that for each DVR. That would probably lose them more money then gain.

Its far from being wronged IMO. Companies change pricing all the time. Packages change, prices go up, things are moved around, etc. It's a fact of life.

Just like how cell phone companies change packages, etc.

Yeah. You don't want to mvoe over something like that. All companies suffer lapses in customer service. If you want to go Fios do it over product quality.

I agree too, BUT, there is the principle of the matter, AND, if you are in an area with all the new HD channels that Fios has added, it may be a better choice than Directv,,,,from what I hear it has a better PQ anyway.

I have recently been looking at this myself again. The DVR HD Plus package for $73 claims to include HD access and DVR service. Is this true?

I would expect the $105 premium package to also include DVR service and HD access if a lower package does. So if I understand what you are saying, if I want the premium package for my HR20, I have to pay $105 + $6 + 10 = $121 per month???

That is correct.
My bill had the same thing. I called and the rep said they couldn't reinstate the grandfathering - once gone, she said, it is gone and can't be restored, and she couldn't explain why it happened. But she said she set my account for no charge for a year, with a detailed note so that next year that would be done again.

Since it was retroactive to the day in August that I had added Setanta (in time for the new English Premier League season), I thought maybe that was the
reason. But these other remarks make it obvious that DTV has a new plan to bring in revenue. As some point out, that's its right. But DTV is getting very expensive.

I also have a Series 3 Tivo that I use for Comcast, which I use as a backup for bad weather, because DTV doesn't have my local public broadcast station in HD (and I love my UConn women Huskies), and because I love my Tivo. (As I've said a few times in this forum, whenever we have a choice between The HR-20 and Tivo-S3, we use the Tivo because it's so much easier to use.) I was delighted when I read a few weeks ago that DTV had set aside its differences with Tivo and were developing a new DTivo for HD. But I just keep thinking about how expensive DTV is getting.

Sunday Ticket is really the only reason I keep DTV. Comcast in Connecticut has more HD among the non-broadcast channels I watch. Comcast doesn't have nearly as much HD sports programming, however. But all that sports programming costs a lot.

Admittedly, I'd have to buy a new HD Tivo, and pay for the Tivo service, but that would still be a lot less expensive than what I'm paying for DTV. And although Comcast doesn't have as much HD, it still has a lot.

Hmmm.

Premium + HD+DVR at 121 provides a couple dollars savings over PLUS HD DVR and the 5 premiums added one at a time.

In other words, if you were on HD DVR Plus at $73 and you were adding premiums:

1st one: $14
2nd one: $11
3rd one: $10
4th one: $9
5th one: $8
---------------
Total: $52

Adding that to the PLUS HD DVR package amounts to $125

Going the PREMIUM route and tacking on HD + DVR then saves you $4/month.

IMO this is not enough of a discount for a bundle package, but some maya rgue that you have to look at overall value etc. So draw your own judgment

I was in the same boat 5 weeks ago and was told by 2 supervisors that the grandfathering had been discontinued and would only offer me 12 months of DVR credits. But I talked with another rep in retention who emailed the "backoffice" and they took care of it after a few days and reinstated the "DVR at no cost with base package" to my account.

So, whoever told you that it can't be done is wrong.
They should just make Premier level packages like the Choice Xtra, then people would not complain. So:
-Premier (for customers without HD or DVR)
-Premier Plus DVR (for customers with DVR)
-Premier Plus HD DVR (for customers with DVR and HD)
