DVR goes Blank ! then Freezes !

Have a HR21-100 this morning was watching a pre-recorded show and when i used the 30 second jump key several times the screen went blank ! The box shows all the lights on but nothing on the TV. So I hit reset which everyone know that sucks ! Have to wait for ever ! Now watching a show in Double play and when i reversed the 30 second replay to get back wer i was the screen goes blank again ! WTF

No error codes nothing ! just a blank screen. Anyone else experience this ?

What does it do if you press play, instead of the 30 second replay , and then rewind to where you want to be ?

I tried and none of the buttons would respond. Its dead

This time i didnt do the reset. After a few minutes it did the reboot it self

and came back on. This really sucks now im afraid to rewind

I never have FF and then use the 30 second rewind and I do not know if that is causing it or not.
Edit: I just did that without a problem.

I would try the play button when you get close to the spot in the program and see if that worked.

If not, you could run the System Test and see if it reports errors.

Have you run this test ?

Run the Built in Self-test to try and repair your hard drive.
To run the hard drive tests, do the following.

Reboot DVR with the red button next to the smart card.
When you see "Running receiver self-check" press Select

You should see a message "Entering Diagnostics Mode"
Choose Advanced Tests Menu ,
Hard Drive utilities ,
Short Smart test

Next run the file test, the DVR will try to repair a bad file if present.

If you receive error messages from the above stop and post them back on
here.

If the all tests pass, you can run the surface test. This test is long and
could take several hours .
You may want to run it overnight.
Every attempt is made to save programming / recordings .

I had a hard drive fail with the same symptoms, assuming your HR21 is four or five years old the drive would be a likely suspect.

Probably a Hard Drive going bad and taking too long to respond just as an old PC does before it gives us the Ghost!!!

The hardDrive is 6 months old i installed a 2 tera. So i still have the old harddrive if it is going to fail. I had one fail 3 years ago and replaced the drive. So ive seen them fail. What is strange to me is why is it blanking then goes into reboot mode. I guess tonight b4 bed I will Run the Diagnostic on the drive. Since it will probably take 6 hours since its a 2tera.

If it is not the Hard Drive then I would guess it is the Power Supply which is failing or marginal and needs to be Replaced.

P Smith could be a big help for you so give him a PM and ask his opinion.

I have electronic's back ground. So testing the power supply would be easy for me. But if it was PS why isnt it going out while its playing normally ? it only goes out when im messing around with the Skip key or rewind

Its been working good all day. Its going to suck doing the Diagnostics on the harddrive ! It takes 24 hours for Dave to get my info back into my DVR

you would think Dave was smart enough to use the internet as an alternative to stream the schedule and Info for faster reset.
