DVR recordings not working

2864 Views 31 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  Rich
I replaced the hard drive a year ago with a bigger storage hard drive and everything worked great. Now a year later, the recordings aren’t working but watching live tv works great. What could be causing the recordings not to work even though live tv works with no problem? Could it be the fan? The bigger hard drive is causing the recording to not work? Any help will be appreciated.

If the drive was working and it isn't anymore, it isn't because the drive is too large. If that were the case, it wouldn't have worked out of the gate. Live TV doesn't require a working drive.

Chances are pretty good that the drive (or the interface if it is an eSATA setup) has failed.

To get the best help, sharing the model number of the DVR and how you've connected the drive is pretty much an imperative.
It’s an older DVR HR 24/100. I just took out the old hard drive and connect the new one how the old one was connected.
Yes, for just over a year it worked no problem watching recorded programming. Now it stutters for most of the recorded stuff I’ve had previously recorded
Sounds like the drive is going bad. If you put a "normal" drive in there (non AV application) or a 7200 RPM one or the fan died or you don't have good cooling, it will shorten the drives lifespan by ALOT. Plus, the HR24 is a junky DVR. Never been that fast and with software updates over the years, it got a lot worse. It got to the point, where they're unusable now.

If you're going to replace the drive again, the forum recommends that you use a SSD instead. Will solve the heat problems and compensate for the slowness. But either way check the fan too.

I’m first going to replace the fan and see if that helps, if not, then replace the hard drive
I would be surprised if the fan was causing the problem. A new SSD will likely resolve the issue as well as making the HR24 more responsive. If you have to replace the HR24 with a newer DVR, the SSD can be moved to the new one.
Ok thanks for your help. I’ll replace the hard drive first and see if that fixes it.
Replace with an SSD for best results.
How about running a short smart test? Can that help repair the hard drive?

If the fan is dead and you have it in an enclosed cabinet, it can get VERY hot, even in idle. I had an old HR24 lose a fan, and it destroyed the front LCD panel of the equipment it was sitting on. It also cooked the hard drive. We're talking about 140ish.

You can do the full drive test. Reset your HR24. When you see "Just a few more seconds..." on your TV screen using your DIRECTV remote press SELECT. This will bring up the BiST menu. Follow the prompts.
I did a hard drive surface test last week, it took over 30 hours to complete. Said it had like 840 errors it corrected but nothing changed when I started it up again
That hard drive is dying. Replace it. It's not the fan.

If you're not getting warning messages about the DVR overheating, it probably isn't the fan that is the problem.

As Bill Engvall would say, "Here's your sign".
Appreciate all the help. Hard drive will be replaced. Thanks again

Just going through recordings and some of the recordings are stuttering and are damaged and some work with no problem at all. I recorded 3 new recordings now and they all work with no stuttering or problems.
The older recordings were probably clobbered by more recent recordings due to a corrupt superblock (allocation table).
