DVR to DVD Recording

Hi folks,

I know this is proabably a silly question, but I have to ask it anyway. I have the directv hr-20 dvr. I recently aquired a dvd recorder. What I need to know is can I use rca cables from the output on the dvr to the input on the dvd? Is that the correct cabling to be able to record to dvd from the dvr?

If I am in the wrong thread, pleas accept my apology and point me to the right one.

Thanks so much.

That setup will work fine. All A/V outputs on the HR20/21's are active. HD programs will down-convert to 480i when exiting the RCA outputs and the program will be in letterbox.

BTW I am moving this to the "DIRECTV HD DVR" forum.

That will work fine but if you have s-video input on dvr recorder it will be even better
just make sure you connect the audio.
I have been doing this for several years and I am very pleased with the results.
also the dvd picture will look alot better recording on the lower time settings....filling the disk to 2 hr max looks way better than the 6 hour max.
To the OP: Make sure you disable your caller ID notification and perhaps disconnect the network connection as well if you have one. Your DVR will output those notification messages to the DVD recorder too!
I have also had very good results recording from a HR21 through S-video to a Panasonic DVD recorder using the 2 hour record mode. I can't tell a difference from the original recording.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by this. I have done this hundreds of times since I got my HR21-700s in December. The video output of the RCA and S-Video lines is NOT letterboxed, it is anamorphic 4:3. This works perfectly when I have the output of my DVD player set to stretch. It completely fills the frame, and the aspect ratios are correctly maintained. The only times this would be an issue is if I attempted to paly one of these disks on an older 4:3 aspect ratio television. Everything would look distorted. Since I don't have a 4:3 television any longer, I'm not worried.
