Hi everyone, 5 year listener..first time caller :lol:

I have an HR24 that I've had for about 1 1/2 years, and the fan has failed and it overheats. I have the protection plan.

When they installed my system they brought 2 crappy beat up HR21s, but I didn't pay anything for them so I "bought" this one from SolidSignal and sent one of the HR21's back.

My question is, Will I receive an HR24 as a replacement or will the send me whatever they feel like? I currently have the receiver sitting on a laptop cooling mat to keep it functioning.

Thanks everyone for all of your great advice! I installed D* and E* for many years and relied on the great advice everyone gave long before I even joined in 2007. Keep up the great work!

They will send you whatever they want. Better bet would be to schedule an in home service call. Then you can face to face the tech and ask him to replace it with an HR24.

I just replaced my HR24-500 through the protection plan and like you was concerned of getting a different receiver. The protection plan agent stated their department (Protection Plan Group) always try to replace with the exact model. They even have a place in the system to make sure it is noted as such. When my replacement came in it was an exact match.

If the fan was the only problem, and the laptop cooler works, I would not even bother replacing it. Or buy a 5V fan velcro it to the back, and plug it into the USB port or something.
Beats losing all your recordings.

So true... Due to my replacement I lost a full 2 TBs worth of recordings. Some are already restored thanks to the programs showing again, others are gone for good.

Generally, a HR24 will be replaced with a HR24. Similar to how DirecTV put a flag in the system to replace HR20s with HR20s if OTA was being used, they can do the same with the HR24. With any other receiver, it is up for grabs as to what you will get.

I wouldn't be worried about D* replacing your unit.. WHy? well, you could call them and say.. well,, Ya know.. I don't need that unit at all.. meaning no monthly payment for the unit ever again.. Hmmm.. Uh.. D*'s gonna replace this and make you happy.. and if you get a bad unit.. throw a little dance , make a little love, get down and tell them that DISH called this week and wants you bad..

ding , Ding DING.. Yes Sir.. what ever do you need sir.. How can we help you sir..

you are covered.. there are few here that D* really has scorned.. and then paid the price at a much later time.. one way shape or form or other..

And what price did DirecTV pay for scorning the few as you put it? :sure:
