Hello, I was wanting to know what extra equipment will be needed to receive international programming from Directv? I was told that I need a 36" dish and a APG receiver. First, I guess that 36" is measured across the dish. What is a APG receiver? Will my 5lnb slimline dish work or will I need a seperate dish as getting one dish to receive HD and international will not be possible? Will my HR20 receiver be able to receive international programming like SBS (Korean) and other internatinal programming? Is there a better, cheaper way to receive non-FTA international programming? Thanks for any help.

Yes you will need the second dish. You will also need a WB68 or WB616 multiswitch depending on the total number of tuners you have. Your HR20 will be fine. Generally speaking the APG receiver refers to D10, H10, R15, HR20 or newer receivers. It may also cover the DTivos.

International programming requires a dish that sees 95 (the Slimline only sees 99/101/103/110/119). The main dish in use for 95 is the international dish:
http://www.solidsignal.com/prod_display.asp?main_cat=0205&CAT=&PROD=DTV66E

Eventually the international programming is going to move to 110/119 so the slimline will work to pick them up, but at this point and time that is not done and there is no set date for it.

It speculated (and hoped by installers nationwide) that the internationals get moved off of the 95 to somewhere that the Slimline can see. However, it is just speculation. I have yet to see anything that indicates that it will be done.

Makes sense though, with how they are not using 110 or 119 for really anything else.

It would be so nice if they just had the SL3, SL5 and SWM options for both. Would make it SOO much easier plus they all use the same dish/mast/mounts!

The 110/119 carries a good number of SD local markets.

I'm fairly sure that 110 is CONUS only and has legacy HD only. 119 has spotbeams for sure and carries SD locals in many small markets, as well as CONUS TPs that carry Latino and "Jade World" Chinese programming in addition to some legacy HD.

110 would be a good place to park the Internationals once the legacy HD is removed. Let's hope!

They could put them on any sat in the sky that would work with a basic 18" dish for all I care. I despise that damn world direct dish. The engineer should be whipped, covered in honey, then hung over an ant hill for the ants & bears to enjoy.

The dish itself isn't so bad; it's the damn "tripod" mount that is such a huge pain. If the main mast/foot design was like all other dishes, even if support arms were needed, it would be far easier to deal with.

Don't forget your 13mm!

You guys are off the hook! I know this is a Directv question, but do I have to pay for the equipment and install, or can I get the equipment from Directv for free and then install it myself?
There is an installation cost, but it is generally far cheaper to let them do it than it would be to buy the dish and switch and do your own install.

(DirecTV does NOT ship dishes & switches for customers to install. If they supply it, they insist on their installers installing it. If you want to do it yourself, you have to buy the equipment on your own.)

I say the dish is badly designed and butt ugly, the mount is f'n stupid, and putting the LNB Assembly together is something you need three hands for, but the worst part is figuring out the 13mm part on your own, (since it isn't mentioned in the manual and all of us installers have 1/2" wrenches galore but rarely metric in the tool belt).

What's even worse is if you (or your tech) loses some of those bolts. It isn't very easy to find metric nuts and bolts in those sizes at most hardware stores. My solution was to replace the missing ones with 5/16 bolts/nuts, but if anyone ever tries to mix and match parts on that dish, they'll be in for a nasty surprise.
