Error 771 Help!

846 Views 11 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  NOYB111
My HD DVR just starting giving me the 771 searching for signal message. I rebooted this morning and it worked until this afternoon and now it is doing it again. Signal is fine as other TV's work and show good strength. DTV support says its my multi-switch thatis built into the dish and they need to send someone out to fix it. Earliest service call is almost two weeks from now! What do you guys know about the multi switch and does this sound like the issue? I have the slimline 5 LNB dish and using HR20-100s DVR.

1) Have you swapped dvr locations to see if the same problem exists?

2) Might be a bad BBC. Try swapping those from the other unit.

3) Check all your connectors on the unit giving the error. Some might be corroded or loose.

Just three quick things to check.

Whats a BBC?
Those are the small gray or black rectangular boxes connected to the antenna jacks in the back of the receiver. The antenna lines plug into the other end of them.

Remove, inspect for corrosion, and re-tighten with a 7/16" wrench all the connectors in the antenna lines to this receiver, all the way to the multi-switch. Be especially suspicious of wall plate pass-throughs.

The receiver swap suggested above should tell you a lot about whether you really need that service call!

1. Took working IRD from another room and hooked up where HD DVR was, it works fine.
2. Took HD DVR and hooked up where other IRD was and still gets searching for signal.

I have to assume its the DVR that is screwed up since it doesnt work where other working IRD's do and working IRD's work where it does not.

Tech support said it was the multi-switch. Does anyone agree? I wouldnt think that has any thing to do with it since I have strong signal on other IRD's on all transponders.
Called DTV back and told them they are full of SH*&... They are sending me yet another new DVR. The DVR died about 6 months ago, hard drive that time, and this is the replacement. Two dead DVRS in about 14 months.. quality equipment... NOT!
When you moved it, did you leave the BBC's at the original location, or did you bring them along, dangling off the back?
I have the same problem on my HR20-100. Been happening for a few weeks on a couple of channels. for me, it's CNN, NGC. It was also spike, USA and others, but those are working now. CNN seems to be contstant.
I called support yesterday and they had me do the usual things, reboot, check cables, etc.
Then she said I need a service call for 80 bucks. I said no, and asked for the cancel dept. Then I received an 80 credit. Appt in one week.
I see a bunch of folks are reporting this lately, so I am not hopful on that service call.

Also, my other older DVR and another receiver are fine on all channels.

did you take the little grey boxes from the working location to the non-working location? If not try that.

What are your signal strengths? Could be something as simple as a misaligned dish.
Its not a misaligned dish since its been working for 1.5 years and still works for other TV's in house. Checked other IRD's and they show strong signal.

Removed BBC's and replaced with NEW ones I had in a box and it still didnt work. This is a replacement DVR of one that died about 6 months ago so I had new BBC's that came with the replacement.

I am confident its the DVR. I left it overnight set up on another TV and it feels hot as hell. Hotter than I would think it should be.

Either way we will know for sure tomorrow when the new one arrives. I will post if the new one works. If it does, we know the problem for sure. I am confident it will work.
Got the replacement DVR today. POS. Its a refurbed HR21-700. So of course I am losing features like RF remote and OTA tuner. I was correct in the fact it was my DVR that was broke and not my multi-switch as they tried to tell me. TV works, just not happy with DVR replacement. Sooooo I complained loudly and they are sending me a new HR20-100 like I had. Then I send back this POS. Why do they make it so difficult to do business with? Do they want to lose customers? :nono2:
