And I am ready to hook it up to my HR20-100. Am I correct that I shut down the HR-20, plug in the Freeagent pro, connect the esata cable and power up the HR-20???
Has anyone failed to get this combo to work? Are the any new issues to be aware of?

After you power up the eHDD, plug the HR20 back in. Oh, and wait 15 minutes to power the HR20 back on, just to be sure.

Some people couldn't get it to work, while others had no problem. In other words, 'it's a crap shoot.'

Note: If it doesn't work, call D* and complain. Maybe they'll get this obvious eSATA problem worked out.

I have several HR2X with external drives and successfully swap internal/external by powering enclosure on or off with a dvr reset only. No need to disconnect dvr. And like Guitar Hero and I both found out, don't buy the Cavalry brand. Utter junk. I prefer enclosures with a fan but the FAP should work. If it starts stuttering or locking up it's getting too hot.

Do I use an esata to esata cable or use an esata to sata cable?

I think the steps are to unplug the HR20-700; insert the proper esata cable from the FAP 750 to the HR20-700; plug in and power on the FAP 750; and then plug in the HR20-700? Is that the correct sequence?

• Plug in and turn on eSATA drive.
• Plug in HR20. Let it power up normally and you're good to go.

I had a FAP 750GB on my HR20-700 and it worked fine.

I have a different enclosure on my HR21. The FAP didn't work well with the HR21 so I took the drive out of the Seagate enclosure and put in a different one. You shouldn't have any problems with HR20 though.

IIRC, eSATA to SATA cables are for connecting current eSATA drives to the older devices with SATA ports. Do not use this one.

Use an eSATA cable. You can get one at BB or Staples.

I am asking about the different cables because the drawing in the HR20 manual lists the port as "S-ATA". This manual is the only one available for both the HR20-100 and HR20-700. I am not able to easily look at the back of the HR20-700 receiver to see if the wording is the same. Since you have used the eSATA cable successfully on the HR20-700 and the FAP 750 Gb, my concern about the name for the port seems to be unfounded. Is that correct?

You might want to order a SIIG type 2 eSATA to eSATA cable. Never read anything bad about those cables. NewEgg has them.

First, that manual is pretty much worthless. The HDs are called "Serial ATA" drives and if they are external, the name becomes "eSATA'' or "external serial ATA" drives. Doesn't matter what the back of the DVR says, you need an eSATA to eSATA jumper cable.

I've been tempted to call Seagate and ask them why the FAPs work with the 20s and not with the 21s. The two times I have called them, I had to wait on the phone for over an hour each time. When you do get them, they usually solve your problem or just flat out tell you it won't work. For the 21s, I switched to Cavalrys and have had no problems.

Kind of makes you wonder when you see posts that state flatly that all the HRxxs are identical or close to identical, doesn't it?
