I just scheduled the installation of my HR20 and the CSR said that the installer will take my R15 with him when he leaves. From my reading here, I've been lead to believe that this isn't the way it works-- that I should receive a box later to ship it back to Direct TV.

Does the installer ever make the exchange directly?

Heres my situation. It might not be the case in every situation. I had a tech come over to check out my problematic hr20. After it was decided it should be replaced he got on the phone with directv. We were both lead to believe that the next tech to come out would bring the hr20 with him and take back the old one. It turns out directv ships the hr20.

I have deactivated a couple of receivers and the tech left them both.

He said D* would be sending a shipping box, but they never did.

Don't know if that's how it always works, but that's how it went with me.

I'd say if you were deactivating an HR20 (which is in short supply) they'd ask for that!
