Experimental Small Slimline3 Dish

Experimental dish is ready for full testing, this small dish is configured for 99-101-103 operation to the head thats above gold rails.

If successful I plan on replacing the head with a slimline 3 LNB.

First test with birdog meter shows strong 101 reading of (201):)

Over the next couple of days I will test and report back about 99-103 signals.

This dish will be for fair weather operation, camping tailgating etc.

That's pretty clever! Far beyond my abilities...
Great work.
Will be looking for updates on Ka signal strength.

If this works I'll be the first to buy one off of you on eBay :)
It works but with mixed results. In a nut shell I can get 80 on any given transponder for 103(c) or 99(c) but not at the same time. small adjustments to the tilt and elevation bring up one set and lower the others.

Conclusion is that the dish is slightly the wrong shape, but 101 stays rock solid the whole time.:)

As far as I'm concerned it's a keeper 229 HGTV HD and 359 Fox business news HD worked easily.:)

I will keep testing and report back.LNB plastic eye is 13.5 inches away from the face of the dish.

just a suggestion, but maybe the dish needs to be flattened slightly horizontally
The "newer" 18" round dishes are actually slightly oval elongated on the vertical axis (taller).
Perhaps turning that dish on the side may help.
Also the phase III dishes are pretty small compared to the AU-9.
Maybe than could work??

I think a phase 3 dish with an adapter at the correct focal point will do the trick nicely.

I will keep at this till I get it working correctly,First try and it almost worked.:)

Matt, it sounds like the round dish was being aimed just slightly off center from the 101 beam (either left or right) and that would get either 103 or 99. A slighly more oval dish on the horizontal would allow for a more oval (Wide) focus and probably give you both 103 and 99
Done !!:) and it works great 85 signal strength for 103(c) & 99(c) 90-100 for 101.

Very simple I just used a flat blade screw driver to allow the key on the bottom of the LNB to pass into the metal tube, fits like a glove.

Elevation is 5 degrees higher than normal, phase 3 dish normal setting is 40 for this area, with new head found strong signals at 45.

Tilt should start at normal setting but small movements change the balance between 103 and 99 signals.

nice work, now you need to try it with a new 3lnb
Very interesting, as dave said now all you need is the Slimline 3 LNB (just sees 99, 101, 103).
Yes I thought DTV would have gone back to a smaller dish with the 3 LNB instead of keeping the monster.

I've got a coulpe of old phase III dishes and spare 5 LNB's , you've inspired me to try also. Also have a KAKUKIT I may try.

Thanks

Maybe one of the big problems with the first experiment was the round headed screws bunched together at the center of the dish.
;)
Glad you moved to a standard round with flat heads spread further out like normal.
Are you saying tilt and elevation are the same as if you were setting up the triplesat for 101, 110, and 119?
No, tilt and elevation should actually be the same as the slimline settings. The 3lnb dish was designed with 110 at the focal point, with 101 and 119 as wing sats. Placing the slimline LNB on that dish puts 101 at the focal point, which would require an adjustment in elevation and azimuth to compensate. In most places in the US, 101 is a few degrees higher in elevation than 119.
Edit: New information see post #48.

If you use a slimline 3 LNB with the phase 3 dish just set receiver to slimline 3 and you are good to go!:) :)
Maybe this is an overly simplistic way of thinking, but if the OP could get it to work is there any reason DirecTV couldn't go to a smaller dish?

The only real problem I see is rain fade will last longer with a smaller dish. But also note 85 signal strength for the Ka band isn't to shabby either.:)

Teronzhul you are correct Silimline setup numbers are absolutely correct for this type of dish setup.:)
