Hello,

I have an HR20-100 and I am in the process of researching external HDD's that are compatible with the unit. The internal drive works fine. I just want more space now that we HD LiL's.

1) Are there any drives that do not work with this DVR?
2) Are there specific drives that forum users have had greater success with than others?

3) Should I connect via USB or eSATA?

There are as many opinions on this as there are drives.

First, ONLY eSATA works for an external drive. The USB ports do not support an external HDD.

The external WD MyBook drives do not work with the HR2x's AFAIK.

Many like to use the Antec MX-1 enclosure with a variety of SATA drives.

The Seagate Free Agent Pro external drives work well with the HR20's, but for some reason do not work with the HR21's.

Many will tell you to just replace the internal drive with a larger one, then others will state how that will break your lease agreement with DIRECTV.

Personally I have been running a FAP 750GB on an HR20-700 and a Cavalry 1TB drive on an HR21-100 for a long time with no issues.

A search for eSATA will give you more information than you can possibly ever sort through.

This recent thread talks a lot about the Antec enclosure and different drives to put in it.

Definitely search these threads and you will find some good info. I would recommend the Antec MX-1 enclosure (as would many on here) with a WD drive. I have had good luck with it and it is highly recommended on here. Some drives will work with the HR20, but not the HR21, and vice versa. A good reason to go with the Antec solution is that it will work on all of the HRx's series to the best of my knowledge. If you ever need to replace the HR20 with an HR21/22, you want to be sure your external drive will work with either unit!

So as I understand thus far from reading other threads, the Antec-MX1 makes the system "drive agnostic", if you will. I can use just about any drive with the Antec enclosure. Using another type of solution could generate problems should I need to swap DVRs.

Is my understanding correct?

This is my understanding as well, if it is wrong hopefully someone else will chime in for you!
