Extracting from DishPVR 501?

I have a DishPVR 501 and I'm interested in extracting the files to archive on VCD or possibly DVD. I'm not getting very good quality capturing off the PVR, and I know people can directly extract files from TiVo. Is extraction possible with the DishPVR? If so, how? What's the expansion slot in back for?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi KSJ, Welcome to DBStalk.com!

As far as I know, no one has been successfull in doing much with the 501. The 501 uses its own file system which is the reason people are having a hard time trying to figure it out. The operating system of the 501 is OpenTV.

Tivo on the other hand uses Linux and is easily able to be copied shared and more.

This may be interesting because the new 721 model due out next year is supposed to use Linux who knows what possibilities may open up to us if they do use an easy to manage operating system such as Linux.

Doesn't the 501 work like the Dishplayer? From what I understand, the signal is recorded on to the hard drive in it's encrypted state making it impossible to view anything when extracted.

They have the software and instructions for doing what you are asking.

You are using a VCD and you are having quailty issues?

VCD is poor quality in the first place, not enough room for high bit rate(with any real length of program)

why not just capture the Video out, why take a chance screwing around with "hacking" for a VCD, SVideo would be MORE quality than your VCD will need.
If you are not too picky on perfect video quality then the best thing to do is to send it to the computer while playing the DVR Event if you are not familiar with computers and programs but that does take a while as you have to wait for all the shows to play and do it all manually telling the show to start and all of that.

They do make video cards that accepts a signal from a signal source such as an OTA, satellite, cable, etc. to send to a computer and where you can even use the computer like a Tivo device.
