My HR23 is reporting error 21-190 (internal storage error). When I run the system diagnostics, the drive passes both the SMART test and the surface test, but fails the File System Verification test. I'm trying to understand my options at this point.

1. Is there any way to recover from a File System Verification test failure?

2. Are there any (unofficial, but reliable) guidelines to copy the contents of the disk to a new hard drive such that the programs would be recognizable in the HR23?

3. Is there any reason to remove the hard drive and run a utility like SpinRite in an attemp to repair the drive? (I don't know if a file system error would be caused by a recoverable bad sector.)

4. If the answers to the above are "No", then are there (again unofficial, but reliable) instructions for replacing the 500GB drive in a new HR24 with a larger drive?

If any of these topics are inappropriate for this forum, please PM me.

Thanks,
Jerry

If you're sure you can get a 24, get it. Much better box than the 23s. As to the internal HDD replacement issue, I'm gonna assume you have an owned 23 and will replace it with an owned 24. There are three models of the 24. The 24-100 I've got I've never had apart. I have had an owned 24-200 and it's not impossible to replace the internal HDD, but it's not easy. The 24-500s take a large internal drive very easily.

I gave the 24-100 I have (which is the ONLY 100 model I've ever had that actually works) to my wife and she's already complaining about the small HDD in it. I'm gonna order a 2TB drive and put it into a Thermaltake docking station for her as soon as the prices of the HDDs drop a bit more. You might consider that external setup as an option. It's just easier.

I have run SpinRite several times with Great Results but I don't know if it would correct a File System Verification test failure.

If you do run SpinRite then I would quickly copy the drive over to replacement drive and then replace the old drive with that new drive as when you start having bad sectors show up it normally means the plating is thinning out and you will experience more bad sectors in the near future.

All good feedback, thanks. I ran another system test on the HR23 after the 4th reboot today, and this time received no errors. Obviously something is flakey. I'm going to keep it long enough to try an watch some of the important recordings before it dies. I have two other DVR's (HR21 and HR24-100) which will do all the new recording for now.
