I'm an R15 newbie that has had an R15 about 3 days. I have noticed that the fan starts up fairly frequently. The info and test screen shows that the internal temp is normally between 40-42 centigrade. Is it normal for the fan to be this active when the box isn't very hot?

If the fan is starting up frequently, that also has to mean that it is shutting off frequently. It is most likely the fan's starting up and shutting off that is controling the temp at 40C-42C, and keeping it from being very hot.

FWIW, I have a 1 year old R15-500 and I just got an R15-100. The new 100's fan is WAY louder. At least I think it's the fan. It might be the hard drive, but I think it's the fan.

Mine is also an R15-100. Unfortunately, it is installed in my bedroom and has waken me up. The box shouldn't get hot since isn't enclosed much. I think the thermostat is set too low.

Let's hear from other 100 users.

I hear ya Jim, our new one is in the bedroom too and the fan was loud in the middle of the night last night, even though the unit was off. It didn't wake me up, I have to "thank" my daughter for that, but it did do its best to keep me from going back to sleep.

Just got an R15-100 installed yesterday and the fan NEVER turns off and is as loud or a bit louder than my PC. It can definitely be heard over quite passages in shows. I'm think of calling D* and asking for a replacement. Has anyone else asked for a replacement for this reason and been successful?

It's the R15-100 model the fan runs all the time, I have a couple of R15-500 and never hear the fan , I just recently got a R15-100 and noticed the fan right a way. but it's like a ticking clock or living by train tracks after a while you will not even notice it.:new_sleep

I just paid attention to the R15-100 in my daughter's room, and I agree with everyone--it is louder than the fans in the 500 or 300.

It also moves a lot more air, which I think is a good thing.

I also noticed that her R15-100 negotiates the menus a lot faster than the other two R15s in the house.

Even with my R15-500 fans wired to run continuously, they are so quiet you don't hear them unless you really listen carefully. Quieter than any PC I've got. I guess I should also acknowledge I've got some hearing loss (eh, what did you say???).
