This is prompted by the American Idol finale and many other programs that ran over. I understand that I can program my recordings to record extra time, but this is a suggestion to be more proactive for the less tech savy people out there. (not the usual ones on this board)

1. If there is no recording conflict, every recording will add an extra 5 or 10 minutes at the end. This requires no extra steps on the customer part.

2. When I watch the program, it will stop and give the delete promt at the end of the "normal" recording time.

3. But it will show a modified menu to include (see screen shot)
a. Yes, Delete
b. No, Don't Delete
c. Play Extended Buffer

4. The first two will do what they do now. If I choose "Play Extended Buffer", it will then continue play the extra 5 or 10 minutes.

5. At the end of the buffer (or if the buffer could not record because of a conflict), the original menu will appear.

Thoughts? I looked to see if this was suggested, but could not find it. if it is, please post the link.

Sounds good to me. Better yet, revamp the whole system and come up with a system where the broadcasters embed some sort of signal into the programs when they start and end. If there are no conflicts, then record the show according to those embedded signals and not what’s in the “outdated” guide. This would solve the problems not only for programs that run over, but also for programs that start late because of an earlier overrun.

Why would you make it an extended buffer? Just automatically pad everything if there is no conflict. So a 1 hour show will just be 1:05 or 1:10 all the time except if both tuners are in use otherwise.

I'll bet you will see it implemented this way sometime. ;)

I'm fairly certain you won't see anything longer than 2 minutes. Anything longer would frustrate people who FF to the end to get the Keep or delete message. (Even if you could try to teach them to use other techniques.)

Cheers,

This has already been addressed. In the most recent CE release for the HR series of DVR's, all recordings that do not have a conflict automatically record for an extra 2 minutes at the end of the show and 10 seconds at the beginning of the show. The KOD prompt appears at the end of extra 2 minutes if it was recorded so it always plays the extended buffer.

Of all nights to miss a CE... Can they read my mind. I'll have to stock up on tin foil for my head to prevent them doing a scanners on me.

That new one sounds like it might do the trick. Although I would like it to extend further than that which would make sense to add the third of of "Play Extended".

I'm still not sure why you are asking for a choice to play the extended data that is recorded anyway. Why not just tack it on as if *you* did an extension yourself. Less bother that way and the data is on the disk anyway.

That is the way the CE is working. It extends whatever you do. If you pad, it adds to the pad. But it just plays to the end without user intervention.

Let us remember what happens in CE should stay in CE...

Take a peek over there, several good discussions about this.

One major problem with this approach to interrupt the program to ask if the extension will be played is that ... there is a pop up message to ask! What if someone is archiving a show to a DVD recorder and needs that last 1 or 2 minutes? They'll archive both the message prompt and a noticeable pause as the message is addressed ...

It always cracks me up that the people who bring up this issue inevitably are people who got burned by not padding.

I would much rather trust myself to pad live shows, sporting events, etc. than to turn that control over to technology that may or may not get it right and that may or may not mess up another recording either way.

It might be nice if technology were that intuitive, but it seems to me that just by nature the reasons for having this ability can be undermined by the multitude of reasons that an overrun could happen.

I'd love the ability to be able to bypass those danged weather break-ins when the area where the weather issue is is nowhere near me. But I know that's not gonna happen, either.

I've read numbers of threads where it's discussed that "they could just do this" and "they could just do that" and it seems so incredibly easy to some to get something like "auto-padding" done, but if it really were that easy, I'd have to think it would have been on a drawing board already.

I just shudder to think of all the threads that would pop up where BIH this network or that network because they screwed up my recording of this or that because some network/local station moron missed setting this or that.

I am fully prepared to eat crow when all this does come to fruition, but until that time I'll actually take responsibility myself for ensuring I set my DVRs so that I do record all of what I want to watch.

Maybe what we need is an auto-pad feature that can be user defined. I like the 2-minute auto pad that would seem to be coming to a NR near me, but to have the ability to adjust it myself would be good. I’d probably go more. Also, this would answer the issue with people being aggravated for having to FF for longer to get the delete message – if you don’t want that, then set no default padding. If you don’t care how long you have to DF, then set 30 minute padding, or somewhere in between.

Right now, you can set a recording default of 30 minutes. That isn't an auto-pad, but is simple and (more) easily understood by most users.

1. When I brought this up, I missed the CE notes from the previous night. My bad.

2. I geared this for my Mom and less saavy users out there. You guys are the cream of the crop. Not all users think this is easy. How many of our grand parents VCRs still flash 12:00? Put yourself in their shoes.

3. If the auto-pad is locked at 2 minutes and it works 90% of the time this happens nothing else should be done.

4. I still like the auto pad longer with the prompt shown on the screen shot

5. Excellent point. This is exactly the kind of feed back I'm looking for. If a person is archiving, then maybe adding a "play to include padding" (or shorter term) to the play menu.

This won't work. You sometimes have to pad 60 Minutes on Sunday night for an extra hour.... Your solution would not fix this..
6. The new auto pad from this weeks CE won't do it either. I'm not sure if any solution can do that right now, but good point

7. Can a Mod please move this to the proper thread? Thanks.
