Hey guys,
I'm pretty intelligent and somewhat tech smart but getting old. Probably forgotten more than I know. Just picked up a Sammy 55" 3D HDTV and I,m gonna call DTV for an upgrade to I guess the HR24 receiver. Is that what they are going to give me? See the 34 on here but don't know the difference. Also, if I network the receiver, I just need to use a router to connect to my broadband, right? I see this Cinema connection kit from DTV but sounds like their version of the same thing or am I wrong? Just trying to tap into everything the equipment has to offer and any knowledge or tips and tricks you could help me with would be appreciated. Haven't been in here a whole lot but I will and after reading around for awhile I won't have to ask so many questions. Thanks and I don't have a preference after GB folded but I think the Giants have NE's number.

An upgrade could be any HR2x. But with 3D, it wont be a HR20.

Is your current receiver connected to your router?

Can't tell from your post if you currently have multi-TVs and receivers. If you do, you should check out Whole Home DVR.

Welcome. What type of DirecTV equipment do you have right now?

The two main differences between an HR24 and a HMC HR34 is the 24 has two tuners and you can set 50 Series links; the 34 has five tuners and 100 Series Links. You've got a good chance to get the 24 for free whereas the 34 isn't available to current DirecTV customers until next week and the list price is currently $399 (new customers are getting the 34 for $99 -- what, if any, deals for existing customers hasn't been announced).

(oh -- and I think the 34's hard drive is twice the size of the 24's.)

Welcome to 2005. You're gonna wish you upgraded back then.

As a current sub, there may not be much choice what DVRs you get, but if you go "whole home" you will likely get one of the latest ones.

Unfortunately, that number is 3 1/2 against.

Not connected to a router yet. Just using an R15 setup in the LR. I'm wired for the whole house but don't need it with RF or Wifi right. I live alone but if going whole house gets me better equipment, I'll go for that as long as they don't take me to the cleaners. Called a while back when TC with HBO plus DVR got up to $85 and they dropped it to $55 for a year.
