Format w/o a picture or GUI?

No joy with one of my HR20s tonight. I successfully forced an update on 1 of my HR20's tonight, it's running fine. Then tried it on the second unit once the first was finished, now it's in bad shape.

When powering the unit on, all I'm getting is a very dimly lit Power button. I can hear the hard drive spinning up, then after about 10 secs. or so, the Power light goes off.
When the unit is doing this, the screen is just black.
Red button reset does nothing.
I've unplugged it for about 20 mins. - nothing changed.
The unit is on, hard drive is reading/writing but no lights and no picture or audio obviously.
Anyone know any way to kick start it, or do a Format in it's current state.
I think it's hosed!
thanks for the help

Hmmm, someone else in the 0xF6 discussion thread reported a very similar issue. I thought it was just a coincidence, but now it's happened twice...

Thanks Jeremy...

Well after some searching (search can be very helpful if you just use it ;) )
I found this post: http://www.dbstalk.com/showpost.php?p=688352&postcount=4

First time I tried this, it did not work. Then I unplugged the unit for about 5 mins. or so, pressed the dimly lit Power button and bingo, it powered on and it's working again.
I will post this link in the F6 thread as well...
He probably experienced the same thing I did, forced downlaod failed and then the box went haywire...???
I'm going to let this one update on it's own tonight, not going to press my luck.
Hope this helps someone else

thanks
I had something very similar happen to me about 6 times. The first time, the D* CSR assumed I was having a power problem internal to the unit and they sent me a new one. Then when it happened to the new one 5 more times, I started looking in more depth here. Each time I eventually got it back to life with a red button reset, but it took several tries to get it running again.

Here's what seemed to do the trick... Each time I disconnected the power plug and all outgoing cables (component) from the receiver for a few minutes. I also turned my TV off. Then plugged everything back in and did a red button reset.

Also, I've decided not to connect HDMI for the time being.
Well, I'm glad to hear that there is a solution to this problem, and it doesn't appear to be connected to the 0xF6 update.
I had this exact thing happen too. I went to bed thinking my box was dead. I got it up and running, and left the update screen at 0% when I went to bed. I came down this morning and it was off. I thought the worst. I powered it up and it appears fine. Although, it does say I have version OxFA instead of f6. what gives?

Many of us were expecting F6, but when we got up we had FA...a later build, so they must have fixed something and released it nationally. This is another good reason to NOT force an update. A couple people got themselves in trouble forcing the update this time...locked up their boxes or put them in loops so much so they had to pull the plug and let it sit before they could get control of the HR20 again.

Earl has not posted what is different in FA from F6 yet. Gotta let the poor guy sleep sometime! No OTA in FA either....so, maybe next week.
