I have a solution that DirecTV might want to consider if they want to offer UPN and WB to homes that cannot receive signals from these netlets. Its not a perfect solution.
But since, DirecTV seems not interested in offering the superstations possibly because:
1) They might have to impose blackouts
2) MLB EI vs. supers. I read somewhere long time ago, that MLB EI wanted DirecTV to blackout baseball. I dont have verification for this information.
3) DirecTV not interested in offering alacarte.
4) DirecTV not interesting in selling UPN and WB in any form without basic broadcast channels.
However, if they offered FOX affiliates with UPN affiliation (like FOX 30 in jacksonville) as a distant to the white area homes, it would cover both FOX and UPN programming since FOX 30 in jacksonville is a NETWORK affiliate, and has UPN affiliation along with this. Plus with network stations, when DirecTV offers them to unserved households they dont have to worry about blackouts.
I know there are other FOX/WB stations out there that this would work. This is not a perfect solution of course. Some DMAs have a FOX but no WB or only a cable WB, and DirecTV would not be able to offer the distant FOX in a case like this.
