I really HATE having side bars on my TV, I think it looks silly and just bothers me.

From what I read if you have Native on for a 4:3 transmission you can pick 3 settings in 720p and 1080i, Pillar, Stetch and Crop.

I use crop usually, my TV does a great crop but only on 480i and 480p.

The TV can accept all formats except 1080p (1080i is ok).

Anyway here is a for instance, I have Native on, and the HR20 tells me that Fox WNYW is broadcasting at 720p. Great so I go through the 3 formats to get crop, well stretch crop and pillar box all look the same no matter what you set it at it is still a pillar box.


I turn Native off and try it that way every single setting looks the same. on that Channel. I tried another local and it seems to be the same.

Am I doing something wrong or is there something wrong with the box.

The TV is an Toshiba 46H83 it is connect via DVI/HDMI to a Pioneer VSX-82TXS, I have the conversion turned off on the Pioneer so the video is just being passed through to the TV.

I don't know if this is the same issue, but I just got a new dish and now actually have HD service, including locals. Fox is the same on both channels (SD and HD) for SD content (i.e. Seinfeld). The SD channel is in pillar box, with the noise on the top, and doesn't respond to format changes.

Most carriers/networks are no "matting" their 4:3 content to 16:9 on their side of the broadcast.

They are basically PUTTING the bars on the side, and pushing out a 16:9 image. So your HR20, has no way of knowing the difference between the two. It sees it as a 16:9

Its funny I was wondering that same thing right before I read your post.

I was just on WNBC which is 4 HD which is perfectly stretched so I am assuming that is being broadcasted in 16:9 the second it goes to commercial it puts the pillar box back on no matter what setting I have it on.

Why would they do that? So basically unless I am watching something that is truely 16:9 I will always have the bars huh? So I guess its best to watch my news on the non-hd channel then switch over to HD for shows I want to watch?

Sort of along the same line -

I was just watching Scrubs on a local HD channel - there was no "HD" in the title, so it's not HD content. I did an A/B comparison and the HD channels just looks wayyyy better. Forcing format to 720p, but I don't know what the native res was.

So, do HD channels upconvert SD programming? And if so, why is it so much better than the upconverting of the HR20?
