Friend who has NFL ST needs to upgrade: what are best deals being had?

A good friend of mine is a big time KC Chiefs fan here in Houston and has had Sunday Ticket for years. I told him that he has to upgrade his dish to a Slimline and get new receivers to get the games in HD since they are all being broadcast on the sats using MPEG4 compression.

I was pretty surprised that he said that he had not been informed of this by DirecTV even though he is on autorenew. I have been a DirecTV sub since last October and have all the latest and greatest equipment.

Are there any special deals being offered to subs who need to upgrade for sports packages like DirecTV? If he wants to get an HR-2X series DVR do they still offer those for just the price of shipping?

I received a post-card in the mail that offered free upgrades of all MPEG2 receivers for Sunday ticket subscribers. The only downside is that they will likely be refurbished and not new. I had two old HD-Tivos still in my rotation (rest had been upgraded) and they replaced these with refurbished HR20s at no cost. Just tell him to call.

Why is that a downside? As long as the receivers work, whether they are refurbs or not is of little consequence.
There are more details about the free swap offer here. Your friend should be able to take advantage of this.

DTV called me a bunch of times about this offer. They were supposed to be calling everyone w/ a ST subscription.
