So I have the HR34 and a Genie Client. Love the system. Works perfectly as a 5 tuner DVR and a thin client. I deliberately have not activated the 'Genie', because I don't want it constantly suggesting programs I might like. Does it do anything besides that? Am I missing out by not activating it?

Nope, that's pretty much it.

I don't have it activated but I did play around with it a bit when we first got it. It's not as in your face as you make it sound. Some of its suggestions show up in "My DirecTV", which already has "what's on" so it's not like it's adding anything more there. It also pre-records the shows it suggests so you can watch them immediately. It's also pretty easy to remove something from Genie Recommends.
