I applied for HD DNS waivers(even though I have locals) and was told my local Fox 17 WZTV would "probably" approve me within the next two weeks(all others were denied) so I thought it was that, but I guess that hasen't happened yet.
You can log in on your account and look. Log in here http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/global/contentPageIFnorail.jsp?assetId=P4880022#h:583.637. You will need your account number to. It will tell you what you have pending and what you have denied for HD and SD both and when you applied for the waivers. I have done the same thing. I dont get locals from D* but I am in a grade A area and have had NBC, ABC, PBS, and CW approved. Only FOX and CBS to go.

and there it goes.
Yeah I see the channels in the 80's on alot. They usually go out when the news comes on. If you look nightly I bet you will see at least one of them on after 7pm almost every night. They are usually on from 7pm to 10pm CDT on at least one channel. It wont let you DVR them though or at least it wont me lol. I just looked again and its now off.

I have done records through the guide and it just says "you are not authorized this may not record"(or do a manual record) and then it does anyway when they are turned on, my waiver request for WNYW still says "pending".

Yesterday I got the manual record thing but today I did not. Weird.
saw this post at 10:50pm ET but I was too late, darn it!
this happens when a market loses their feed .....so then seem to open it up
and everyone can get it ...
IE; last night during bones our fox station went out , so they opened the national feed for us for the evening ......so everyone must be able to get it at that point ,,,IMHO anyway

I think you are right. The other day our Fox affilliate was having their audio screwed up by Directv who posted a slide saying to tune 88 and check back to see if our local got fixed. They kept 88 open for an hour, during House, then shut it off. Unfortunately, they never did get the audio problem fixed until the next day.

I thought maybe they had addressed the boxes in our area to open up but from the comments it sounds like they just open up all the boxes when there is a problem somewhere in the country.
For whatever reason they always seem to open up the east coast feeds and never the west coast feeds. The only time I saw KNBC open was one afternoon during the olympics.

As mentioned above, Directv turns these stations on when they have problem with any local station's signal. I think the reason that the east coast feeds get turned on more has to do with weather patterns. The eastern U.S. has more severe weather, inluding hurricanes, that can knock out power/cause problems to local stations while weather in the western U.S. is generally more mild. (Of course the western U.S. still has severe weather occasionally and there are many reasons for station outages besides severe weather.)

I have a question. Can we make a sticky to let people know when these channels are turned on so we don't have to make a bunch of threads to do so?

Nice idea!
Agreed that would be a great idea.

Yes except that if it is only turned on for an hour, and some don't happen to look on this forum at that time......::nono:

That is just the "nature of the beast" nothing we can do about that...

I'm all for consolidating all "DNS channel X is on" threads into one thread. However, I think that a sticky is a bad idea. If someone wants to notify people that a channel is on, then they post in the DNS thread and it gets bumped up to the top. If it was sticky, it would just move up slightly in relation to the other stickies and the change would be much less noticeable IMHO.
Those of you with HD packages don't forget to check the separate HD channels, too. Sometimes they'll turn one of those on, too.

I'd rather not have these threads combined and stickied because someone from D* might decide it's too well known and switch off this little easter egg.
