Getting Out of DirecTV contract

3056 Views 14 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Jhon69
I just switched back to DirecTV from Dishnetwork ( 2 days ago). I was told by DirecTv when I came back that I could purchase the HD Tivo recorder at a discount once my service was activated. Now I find out that they are out of stock and wont have any available until at least the middle of December. Upon further investigation, the HD PVR system they went to has numerous bugs and problems. My question is this.... how do I go about canceling with DirecTV and go back to Dishnetwork... they weren't perfect but at least things worked properly.

Thanks

I believe they have a 30 day satisfaction guarantee. Use it.

THANKS, I will give it a whirl
And FYI that they haven't made any HD Tivo's for about a year now. Whatever is left is it.
Have you activated ANY receiver with D* yet this time around? If not, I would call Retention (1-800-824-9081) BEFORE activating anything and confirm the whole 30 day trial thing. I've read some other posts here that said once you activate, you lock in.

If you are having any thoughts that you might back out right away, I'd get in writing (notes in yor account at a minimum) that you can cancel within 30 days without any penalty or requirement to fulfill your commitment.
Is there any monetary penalty if you return your leased equipment to DirecTV?

Rumor has it that they charge $12.50 a month for the time remaining on the contract (outside of the 30 day trial). The fee for not returning a receiver (or failing to activate within 30 days) is in addition to the contract buyout.

Really? Wow. I hadn't noticed that in their latest Terms & Conditions. I'll have to look at them again.

I don't see anything in the Customer Contract about a $12.50/mo cancellation fee, only a $15 "deactivation fee".

Check Section 5, subsection (b) YOUR CANCELLATION. In part, "In addition to any deactivation or change of service fees provided in Section 2, if you cancel Service or change your Service package, you may be subject to an early cancellation fee if you entered into a separate programming commitment with DIRECTV in connection with obtaining Receiving Equipment, and have failed to maintain the required programming package for the required period of time."

This link indicates if you do not fulfill your programming commitment they can charge you up to $150 for standard receivers and $300 for advanced receivers. Based on the 12 or 24 month commitment period, it gets pro-rated out to $12.50 a month for the full and/or partial months remaining.

Yeah, I heard that "30 day guarantee" thing from a lot of people on a few different forums when I was switching, but Directv didn't seem to know anything about it. As far as I know, it's 12.50 for each remaining month of your commitment.
thanks for all the advice and help.. I appreciate it.
30 Day guarantee is a myth. I know, I tried it. You have 7 Days to let them know. If you don't cancel within 7 days you will be assessed a $300 cancellation fee that is reduced by $12.50 a month. In addition, you lose all money you paid for equipment.

My story: I got the HD TiVo in late August right before the HR20 was released. I had problems getting my locals OTA and I tried to cancel on the 10th day of service. Directv told me I would be out the $330 I paid for the TiVo PLUS a $300 cancellation fee. $630 for 10 days of service.

I spoke to retention and they agreed to come back out and install an AT-9 and they gave me the HR20 or $20 and let me keep the HD TiVo.

I plan on keeping Directv for a year and see what happens. The HR20 is shall we say "servicable".
the 30 day period was only an offer back in april and the 7 day period was the amount of time you had to make up your mind and has been revised recently
I remember that awhile back both DirecTV and DISH was advertising a "30 day guarantee".Guess they had too many customers cancelling on the 29th day.Talk about having faith in the service you sell they can't even guarantee it for 30 days.
