Going The HD Route

This is my first post here. However, been reading all about Dish Network here for couple years.

I have a Dish 500 with a DP Pro Twin LNB (two out ports) for 110 and 119 satellites, which is coaxed to a Dish 508 and 301. It's been in operation for 7 years or more. It's been a very good system... no problems at all... discount the infamous "rain fade" you all call it. I tell everyone the reason the satellite goes out, is all due to a flock of birds flew by. We (wife) want to buy a 37" or 42" LCD High Definition TV, but from what I have read here, the Dish 500 will not make the grade, all due to the two satellite signals. Plus, I see I will have to upgrade to a HD receiver of some type to get the HD channels.

What if, I install another Dish 500 with a single LNB to get satellite 129, and remove the DP twin, and add a DP Pro "Plus" LNB that has the "In" port from another dish. Will this work?

I'm willing to do all this upgrading myself, being retired and time on my hands.

I bought a Dish 1000.2 antenna from a cockroach seller on ebay, who took my money and didn't ship. NOTE: I'll explain about that story later in another thread)

Either (the wing dish with a DP Dual and a DPPlus Twin on the main dish, or a 1000.2) will work to get 129, but you might actually need to get 61.5 instead, if your locals or your local RSN is on 61.5 and not 129. The national HD channels are mirrored on both. If you need 61.5, a wing dish is the way to go.

What constitutes as a "Wing Dish"? Would this be a dish attached to the side of the main Dish 500?
Wing dish = a second dish, pointed in a different direction than the main dish. It is frequently mounted close to the main dish, but does not have to be. It will not be directly attached to the main dish, though.

Very Good reply, IIP

Ok, I'm seeing some Dish 500's (new/used) on ebay with DP pro plus, and one or two with a dual LNB. Due to the fact I now have a setup of a DP Pro 'Twin" LNB on my present 500 antenna. Can I used one coax from one of the ports on the LNB, and point it at 61.5 sat? That would leave me to bid on one of the ebay Dish 500 with a DP Pro Plus LNB, and use it as my main 110 and 119 sat finder.
I'm thinking this would be the way to go. Would the Dish 500 get as good a HD quality has if I had a Dish 1000.2 antenna?
Yes, I suppose you could use your existing DP Twin for your "wing dish", but you would be better off picking up a DP Dual instead, as those are designed to pick up only a single satellite, and there is no built-in switch to confuse the DPP Twin that you'll use on the main dish. Ideally, you'd want an I-adapter instead of the Y-adapter as well.

A 2-dish setup is actually slightly better than a single-dish setup for signal strength, which means slightly less problems with rain/wind fade in stormy weather. There is no such thing as a difference in picture quality, though. Either you get enough signal to get a picture, or you don't. There's very little middle ground with a digital signal.
