Greetings from a New Dish Customer...

Just wanted to say hello to all you guys and gals! On July 18 I came over from DirecTV after being with them since 1997! It was a grueling decision, but now that I'm here I'm glad I did it. Pricing was just getting too high over there! Plus the summer special made it a pretty easy decision. At Direct I had 2 HD DVR. Both were pretty slow to respond to remote commands. One of them even required about 10 attempts if I ever wanted to pause a program! But I loved the picture quality at Direct. That's what made the decision such a hard one to make. But I was getting really tired of them NOT having BBC America in HD, DIY and The Cooking Channel in HD, NatGeo in HD, plus a few others. So after a few weeks of reading and posting here (and sending PM to Atari a few times!) I decided to take the plunge. (Also received some helpful info from Ray @ Dish. Thanks!)

I now have a Hopper/3 Joey system. (Only 2 of us in our household. Didn't need more than one Hopper). After a short learning curve I am a huge fan of this system! And much to my surprise, I've found HD picture quality (I only watch HD) actually better than Direct! That was a very pleasant surprise!!!!

So far, I've had no issues with the system (except one night last week I came in from work all set to watch the Olympics live on my local NBC station. Tuned to station and had NO signal. Immediately a slide popped up saying Dish was aware and it would return asap. Turns out I had NO local channels. That lasted about 30 minutes, but then they all came back. Don't know what the issue was). I haven't turned on PTAT yet, and haven't really decided if I will or not. If I do it will be just before the new TV season starts).

In most ways I like the way the Hopper works better than my HR systems worked with Direct. I just feel it flows better. My wife LOVES the fact that the Joey in the bedroom makes NO noise at all. Our old HR was very noisy and VERY blue. :)

Anyways thanks for all the advise you gave me during my research phase. Your help helped me make the move!

Glad you like your new Hopper/Joey system
Welcome! Any questions or concerns feel free to post them here and/or contact Dish Internet Response Team (DIRT) for official Dish support!

I definitely love the minimalist look that the Hopper/Joey have. Hopper is silent enough but indeed the Joey makes absolutely no noise (it has no fans.) Also the small form factor for the Joeys is great as well! My only complaint about the Joey is it's "wall wart." However the power supply has to go somewhere and better behind the entertainment center with the other mess of wires than making the Joey bigger! This day and age wall warts are commonplace.

100% of the time that I see the message you saw, it is due to a low Satellite signal. It only affects the HD local feeds and is only remedied by tuning the dish. I would give Dish a call and see if you can get a tech to come out to peak your dish. Until then, if it happrns again, you can still veiw the SD version of the affected HD local channel.
Watch the temperature of H/J ! It could bring freezing video/audio soon.
Welcome! I just joined as well. I posted my major issues on another thread, but here are some minor questions that might fit here:

On Directv, if I watched a show but didn't delete it, it would turn gray on my DVR. Is there a way to make this happen on Dish?

And is there any way to make closed captioning come on automatically whenever I mute the tv?
Good choice on going with the Hopper / Joey system.
By far the best thing going right now!
I've had the Hopper/Joeys for a month now and couldn't be happier. No more having to set three different DVRs. Just do it on one and have the recordings automatically go to folders.
