I was just reminded tonight about a couple things that I think are stupid because they don't exist on my 622 DVR. I had D* a couple years back and my (non DVR) receiver had them.

1) I want a way to click on the channels and see what those cryptic letters mean. Like tonight I was trying to figure out who or what was the ID channel. On D* I could scroll into the channel list and get a pop-up that told me something about the channel itself.

2) This is BIG for me. On D* there was a way I could get to a menu or something that allowed me to move the guide by days or a week. I know there is a show on a certain channel next Thursday. I want to get to next Thursday so I can browse in the guide around a certain time. I see no way to do that on my 622 except to hold the frigging forward key for minutes while paying attention, and it really sucks.

If I missed something and these can be done, please let me know how. If I am right, surely these are big stupid holes in obvious functionality that I would expect the designers to see.

Rexa,

DISH's web site has information on the channels. After a while you will know the channels by heart.

Also, I highly suggest that you read the manual. It has a lot of useful information.

To jump hours ahead you can also press a number and then right arrow to jump that amount of time.

As to #1.. Nice enhancement but it would not put Dish's guide into the "Sucks" category. I personally find the guide fast and quick and easy to use and I think over time once you get use ito the channel mapping you will find it also that way. One thing the guide does not handle well is when shows are less than 30 minutes. The guide is divided into two segments per hour and if there are 3 shows one does not show. This does not happen alot with mainstream channels but is a definite issue with other channels (JapanTV one of them). I personally would like to see an enhancement to address this issue in the future, but I definitely do not think the guide sucks. Personally I rate guide speed top so I am very weary of changes to the guide that might result in performance degradation.

How about a button on the remote to toggle closed caption on and off? I have a 20 dollar dvr that has that feature.
Much requested and inexplicably absent, but as it's not a feature of the Guide, it's off topic in this thread.

The idea of a tip about the channel is a good one, though I agree its absence is hardly enough to go to "sucks".

My 722's guide is excellent -- what's the problem?

As has been said, "When all else fails, read the manual."

I always though Dish's Guide should have this feature that I had with Comcast:

I look ahead for all the programming on VH1 Classic and the Sci Fi channels, for example. On Comcast, I could call up the programming for a single channel, and it would have something like 8 hrs of programming listed for that single channel per page. Makes it very easy to look forward days in advance. But on Dish, you're stuck with either the browse feature, or the Guide itself, that even in HD mode, can only show 3 hrs or so worth. I asked this question a while ago, and it sounded like older Dish receivers had this feature, but it's gone now.

I'm not new to Dish, and I am with you on this one. I have had other DVR's which do this, and it is highly useful. I guess this belongs on a wish list, rather than as a gripe.

Ya, you know what else sucks! How on DirecTV guides there's no indicator that you don't subscribe to a channel. I'll be visiting my grandma who has D* and I'll click on a show that I want to watch and I get this message displayed saying to call customer service to subscribe. It's a freaking marketing ploy to entice you to subscribe to more channels. And you CAN'T opt out of it. WTF? Way way worse then not having the channel name clickable in the guide.

I like the guide, but it could be improved with Channel descriptions and with a per channel guide option. Like you click the channel letters/# and up pops a screen with say 12 hours or 24 hours of schedule for that channel with the full name of the channel at the top. That couldn't be that hard to program.

Re #2: When viewing the guide, each press of the Skip Forward button jumps forward 24 hours.
Ok, my bad. I never saw those couple lines in the manual. Thanks.

BTW, I am not a newbie. I've been a on dish with this receiver for a couple years.

Sorry if my title wording was too harsh for everyone. I guess it was because the thread has been edited.

So you know exactly what all of the channels are? I rather doubt that. I know the channels that I watch regularly, but the desired feature makes it possible to get the information out of the guide without walking over and booting my PC, etc, etc.

On the other issue, as I said, I'm really sorry I offended everyone because I missed a couple lines in my manual.

Not offended. Thought it was a bit harsh jump Rexa, but excellent feedback on the guide. The jump 24 hours in advance and the jump X hours in advance features are really helpful and I am sure once you try them out you will be going.. WOW.. Wish I would have known that one a year back. :D

The other key that I use a lot is the PIP Swap to toggle between TV1 out and TV2 out.
