This isnt my setup but a neighbor. He has a new H20 connected to samsung dlp. works fine with component however with HDMI ( tried 2 different cables ) picture comes in and out with a message about searching for signal to full picture. I am assuming the TV is putting out the message. Is this a know issue with HDMI and the H20?

If it is a H20-100, it is a known issue. Component should work.

I have the same issue. Will the HDMI work with other H20-XXX and is DirecTV addressing the issue?

Has anyone tried passing the signal through a HDMI switching receiver? Just wondering if it might solve the problem.

Yes on both counts, as far as I know. Component will work with the -100.
Is this a problem that appears over time on the h20-100's? I just had one installed and it's working fine over HDMI to my Panasonic 42 inch display.
It apparently only happens with certain brands, notably Samsung. Perhaps there is too much room for interpretation in the HDMI spec.
The same thing is happening on my Olevia lcd. If i set it to 480p it will work fine. I hope they fix this.
I have a Samsung DLP TV and I have used HDMI with my H20 and now with the HR20. I didn't have an issue with the H20 but I did originally with the HR20. But I have had the HR20 hooked up to my Samsung DLP via HDMI for the last month without a problem.

Your H20 is a H20 -600 not a H20-100. H20 600 works fine with HDMI to the Samsungs. The H20 -100 use a different HDMI chip that has a hand shake problem with some other HDMI chip sets. D* said next software update will fix this. That was over 6 months ago and still no update from Ver. 100C.
Did DirectTV resolve the H2O to Samsung HDMI issue?

Don't think so yet
I have H20- 600 with the latest CE software to sammy DLP HDMI and sometimes it has issues .
I just hit reset
I had the same problem with the H-20 connected to a 50" Sammy DLP. HD channels would display via HDMI, but non-HD channels would only display thru component input. I could also not get the HD locals at all. Nothing I tried worked. This is what DID resolve the problem:

I unplugged the H-20 from the wall, and disconnected the "Sat In" coax cable as well. I then plugged the H-20 receiver back in, and let it start rebooting until it gave the message "Searching for satellite signal". (The Samsung TV was set to "Component input".) Then, I reconnected the "Sat In" coax, and let it reaquire the satellite info. After the reboot was complete, I switched over to HDMI input on the Sammy. All channels could now be viewed thru the HDMI. Also, went to the setup menu for "Custom 1" and there they were! Digital feeds for the locals from D*, which could then be added to the program guide.

I have no idea why, but it appears that once all rebooting and setup had been done using the component output, HDMI started working. This had been a problem for months, and this was the only procedure that fixed it.

Don't forget to leave the satellite coax disconnected until the "Searching for satellite signal" message appears.

I hope this works for you.

Samsung , among others sets, does not support 480i over HDMI. They do support 480p/720p/10801i. Go into the setup menu and de-select 480i/p and it will be fine. This way all SD is converted to 720p and the hd content is handled by the Sammy.. If you want faster channel changes and no screen blinking, turn native off and set the resolution to 720p for 720p native display, 1080i for 1080p native displays.
join the club h20-600 stinks

I could not wait to try your solution. Tried it several times but it did not work for me.
Im having the same issue with my Samsung 4095dx 40" 1080 LCD.

I can get it to work fine with Component but i get no sound when i try using optical sound or regular rca outputted sound. Any ideas?

I'm a little confused. Your LCD is fine with Component. Does this include sound? Are you connecting the optical out from the satellite to the optical connection on the back of the LCD? If so, this will not work as you LCD does not decode DD. The optical connection on the LCD is an "out" connection as its purpose is to pass DD from your digital TV receiver to a SS box.

Setting up your LCD with component should include two RCA audio cables from the satellite box's "Audio Out" to your LCD's "Audio In". The video and audio cables should be inserted in the same Input grouping on the back of your LCD. My guess is you have two HDMI inputs and two Component w/Audio inputs on your LCD with an assortment of composite/svideo inputs/outputs as well.

Agreed. I have the same tv and the digital outet is for "audio out" only. You can use the digital out to a surround sound receiver that has a digital audio capability.

Back on subject, I wish that I could get the HDMI to work on my samsung LCD 46". I believe that in my directv instruction booklet it says HDMI is the best for picture quality... why sell a unit that can't always handle it?!

they are adressing the issue...it turns out that HDMI "standard" is an oxymoron. Samsung tv's have the most problems, but some other brands do also. The 600 series has no such problem with any TV....leading it to be BOTH the fault of the TV manufacturer AND the manufacturer of the 100 series. (and the yahoos who oversee the HDMI "standard")

Oddly, it only happens with combos of the 100 series and _some_ TVs.

HDMI's always been a joke.

('course my LG tv works great with it, but then...it's an LG)

I'll also freely badmouth samsung products. They've always been second-rate.

component's just spiffy, and despite what the guy selling them says, no-one will notice any diff with compnent -vs- hdmi.

many stores (compusa) compare "composite" with HDMI in the store, luring dumb customers into the idea that because component SOUNDS like composite, they're the same thing.

they're not.

By the way, on about half of the TVs the problem happens on, it only happens when a 1080 signal is fed to a 720 (768) TV, or a 720 signal to a 1080 TV. try removing the resolution your TV is not (which is most likely 1080, since even "grand WEGA" by sony is often 720)
