So as you can see in the title I called CSR today to "upgrade" from an H21 I have in the master Bedroom to the DVR HR2* (since I don't know which one I will get).

The CSR was obviously happy to do it for another $99 charge and a service call for $29. I have the protection/service plan should he have charged me the service call?

And the second question is he said he has to send the tech out to my house to install it.... I was like wait a minute, I installed my own SWMLine dish I think I can do that, why send someone out. Just fedex me the new HR2*. He tried, but he insisted he needs to send someone out.

What do you all think I should do? Wait until SEPTEMBER 25 (a whole month from now) for them to "install" (drop off) the HR or call back CSR and insist they mail it. Also what are my "rights" with the protection plan? I take it it doesn't cover upgrades?

Go and get your HR2* from a local retailer like Best Buy, Circuit City. Costco if one is near you has the best deal, 169.00 So for 30 bucks more you get it right away and install it yourself. At my local Best Buy they have the HR22 on their shelves but at Costco they have the HR21's.

They will ship them, and I'm guessing the "service call" is for the installation which you would not get if just shipped. Try one of two things. 1. call back and talk to a different CSR. 2. Order online.

Thanks all...

Well I may have done the bone head move of already paying for it. That doesn't bother me the most ... the fact that he said he can't ship it to me with a return so I can return the H21 blows my mind. Also that I have the 29.00 fee.

And like I said since I already payed for it, I really can't go to BB or costco can I? Will they refund me even if I try to cancel? Like I said it doesn't bother me about the paying for the reciever. Just the $29 and not shipping.

You should be able to cancel your current order with out any problems.

You can pick up a receiver at BB or Costco and activate it on your account no problem.

You will need to also separately call and deactivate the old H21 and make sure they send a recovery box but that shouldn't be a problem either.

If I cancel the order and buy one outright from a big box store, I would keep the H21 and just have it as a back up. I thought if I order the HR2* as an upgrade from the H21 I could maybe get a better deal for the DVR. Well I was wrong. Better luck next time.

If you keep the H21 it will have to be active on your account and will cost you 4.99 a month. If you deactivate it to drop the charge you will have to return it since it's just a lease. Also keep in mind a unit from BB or costco is still a leased unit not an owned unit just like one from DirecTV.

Would guess the 29.00 is a installation charge and not a servce call charge. Do not believe the PP covers new install costs

FWIW and if anyone wants an update:

Called CSR, said can you cancel order and refund Credit Card, said sure. Told gal that I will probably buy from brink and mortar store instead. Said cool call us back when you do. Went to BB this afternoon and thought what the he!! make the purchase, September sweeps are coming and the Wife will love having all the shows to watch after a night shift.

So got the HR21 for the "low" price of $169. Like I said ... it will be used, but if you think about it I spent $268 since I am sending the H21 back (most likely) but then I won't have the $5 lease on a tv that won't ever be used, I guess.

All and all, I want the 4 tuners for this season's shows/sports/hard drive. That and everyone is doing it! Darn these forums and your 4 or more DVR's:D ;)

1st off, the PP is insurance for "Problems", not for upgrades.

I have 2 previous DVR's that I deactivated. They never asked for them back, they are just sitting in my game room. If you are adding your new one to your account without deactivating the old one, then you will just be charged an additional $4.99 a month. If you cancel the old one, they will start charging for the new one, and stop charging you for the old one. You have to watch your bill to make sure they stop charging you. It took me 5 calls over a 3 month period to get mine cleared up. They would credit me when I called, then a week later they would charge me again. Keep a good eye on it, that's all I am saying!

When I was in the same boat your in, they would not ship either. They said the tech needs to make sure everything is hooked up and working well. I am actually glad he did come out, he put all new ends on all my cables throughout my house. That's part of the service call, make sure that everything is A OK.

Also with the PP (an not that it really matters) The guy said, "it will ad a 2 year commitment to your account but that will only be 2 months since you are a new member."

I wanted to bring up the PP but I figure it wouldn't be worth the discussion. If it did add, it's only two months.

What should I take from that. If it did add ... should I just remove the PP? Nothing the PP was intended for has been used. So I am just paying more for nothing really. I think I may leave it on there for a few months and see how the receiver work then think about taking it off.

On a side note .... did I have the wrong title in the topic thread this whole time???????????? It should have been H21 to HR2* ... man I am so stupid sometimes!

The PP does not have a dated contract. You may cancel at anytime given a 30 day notice. He is talking about your 2 year lease agreement. Somebody correct me if I am mistaken please.

The PP is an insurance policy per say. You would not cancel your auto insurance just because they have not paid out anything would you? It is for when a problem does pop up. Which of course could be the day after you cancel, if your luck is like mine!
I believe the five bucks a month is well worth it to me. I am hoping it relieves alot of aggrevation when something fails.

I certainly was not charged any service charge, when I recently upgraded to an HR21-100.

1. I do have the protection plan
2. The receiver that was being replaced was an HR10-250, so no additional cable runs were required

I tried many times to get them to ship me an HR2x and let me do a self-install. Each time, the CSR would explain how it was advanced technology and needed to be installed by a trained technician. I argued that I already had an AT9 dish, two WB68 multiswitches with open ports, and at least two RG6 lines into each room, but it was always a no-go. Even so, they only charged me a $19.95 “S&H” fee that covered the delivery and installation.

A few weeks back, I happened to find that I qualified for special upgrade pricing and was able to get an HD-DVR for $99 with free S&H. I noticed if I chose “professional installation”, it was an *extra* $99. It was only about 4 months ago when they insisted on a professional installation, so I wondered what had changed. Either the HD-DVR has become less “advanced” or I have become more technically qualified I guess!
