I have the HR22 DVR & since the upgrade to the new HD Program Guide—it was bad before—but now it's worse in terms of pressing the remote & what happens on the screen! Slow. Sometimes I'll press the remote & nothing! So, thought, "I'll upgrade to one of the newer units, which I've heard is faster." Thought, "I'll see what DirecTV can do for me, I've been a customer for over 10 years, maybe, just maybe they'll give me a discount or a price break on an upgraded unit." WRONG! YOU WILL RECEIVE NO SPECIAL DEAL WHATSOEVER. And of course you've got the "Directv GAME," "yes, you can order a new unit from us, BUT, we simply cannot guarantee that you won't get the exact same unit you already have (with all its intendent problems)! What? Come on! Is this for real? Yes it is! So there you have it. I'll be buying the HR24 online, where I can actually know what I'm getting. End of story. End of rant.

Keep in mind, you most likely aren't buying an HR24, still a lease with two year agreement unless you're getting one from an owned account (usually used) or paying full price. But in that case you could get it directly from DirecTV and get a new HR24.

The only one they can guarantee is an HR34, or an HR20.

I have bought several "Owned" HR24-500s which function better than the other HR24s and that Allows me to Upgrade my Internal Hard Drive with a 2 TB Drive rather than using an External Hard Drive Enclosure so I definitely recommend going that route.

And it never hurts to do the 9-6-3 procedure...(Hold "mute" and "select" down until 2 green flashes at top of remote, then press 9-6-3 then "channel down", you should get 4 green flashes at the top. Thats it)...
