During a conference call, DirecTV CEO and Chairman Eddy Hartenstein delivered a lunchtime executive interview - with questions from Mickey Alpert, president of Alpert and Associates - at the 2002 DBS Summit in Denver, Colo.

Aside from some usual merger talk and a few quips about the state of the DBS industry, Hartenstein made a few important points concerning what the proposed merged DBS company will do to successfully transfer all subscribers to one abiding satellite TV system. Plus, the DirecTV executive highlighted some of the possible future subscriber incentives that the merged company could offer and both DBS companies' present plans for local TV channels.

"Local TV is No. 1," said Hartenstein. "In the future, customers will potentially benefit from having up to 12 HDTV channels, video-on-demand (VOD)/personal video recording (PVR) services and interactive services. All these make up major food groups."

In order for the merged company to work accordingly with what subscribers are demanding, an extra spot-beam satellite is needed for the combined company before all the major designated market areas (DMAs) receive local TV channels via a DBS subscription - thus serving 100 percent of the nation's TV households.

Hartenstein also commented on what customers will potentially experience when the merged company integrates both the DirecTV and DISH Network systems into one set-top box and an upgraded antenna that can access signals from three satellites. "The upgrade will possibly be done region-by-region," said Hartenstein. "Most set-tops have chips that will allow for both satellite services, but it will most likely be an antenna upgrade."

Too funny!! a little over 2yrs ago, Eddie said locals into local made no sense and that DirecTV would NEVER carry them. What is the rule they taught us when we were kids about using Never and Always?
