Hi All,

I am close to signing up with Dish. I currently have Optimum and need to stop the bleeding. My bill has gotten outrageous!! After my 1st year, the bill went up about $60. Im close to paying $180/month for TV, Internet and Phone.

My plan is to keep the internet $50/month.
Switch my Optimum voice phone # to Vonage for $15/month (Not a promo, this will be my every month price).
And move my TV to Dish.

I've never been with Dish before. Had DTV about 5 years ago.

Anyway, my question is about HBO and Showtime On Demand.
I called Dish and they said they have this service and it works the same exact way it does on my Cable service. Can someone confirm this please?
Does Dish have the same exact options for On Demand that Cable does?
I ask because my wife and I are huge fans of Dexter, True Blood, Shameless etc :+)

Anything else I should know in General about Dish?
I am better off going directly to Dish customer service for the best deals/prices?

Thanks everyone in advance.

You are asking two different questions. Dish answered pretty much correctly the one you asked them. They do have programming from HBO and Cinemax available in several ways using a types of "On Demand." Through a Roku, from a computer, and just announced directly from your Dish receiver. (If you have a compatible one)
When they said it works like cable, they were answering your specific question about HBO/Cinemax.

Now you are asking in general does dish have "On Demand" like cable. I would say No. Cable in general has a different system. If "On Demand" is the most important thing, I do not think you will like it as compared to what Cable can do. But if you want to get more channels for less money, switch.

Contact a representative here for help to get the best most efficient service.

Thanks for the reply. Now I'm confused. Will call dish tomorrow.
I'm more concerned as to what type of services are the same or different. Would hate to sign up and have the installer come out and hook everything up to just find out things are actually quite different.

The difference he is referencing is that cable is the only one that is truly on-demand, as in relatively instantaneous. Sat on-demand takes a little longer to get going, not "true" streaming like cable can offer. The actual offerings for any channel should be identical. If there are 4 out 12 eps of a series available oncable for AMC, those same eps should also be available on other providers, no more, no less.

They are different though access as a Dish customer is getting better.

But two of my adult kids have Comcast in their homes. If your wife needs some instant on-demand selection like Comcast has, shifting to Dish will put you in the doghouse, way back along the back wall.

Sounds like the sales rep isn't one of Dish's own, but a reseller. They're shady bastards sometimes.

Sounds like the sales rep Is stroking me.
It can take several hours to do an install. The equipment costs are not cheap, to be able to offer 30-day free trials would be very expensive and truthfully they would get taken to the cleaners by people who would see it as free DISH for 30 days.

There has to be some sort of trial. Who in their right mind would lock them self into a 2 year contract without first testing the service to see if they like it or not.
You can test dive cars, cell phone providers etc. this should be no different IMO.

"should be no different"-maybe...but the operative word there is should. I also haven't heard of a trial period with Dish

No problem. Go to a local Dish dealer's and take a "test drive" for 30 minutes pretty much like you would a car. You don't get to keep the car at your home to test drive your commute for a month.

I've heard from co-workers about the reseller tactics. Shady isn't the word.

By the way last time I tried test diving a car the water ruined it. :D
Sorry I couldn't resist.

Not having a Cell Phone, I Know shocking isn't it?
They'll let a non cellular user wander in, give them a phone and set them up for a 30 day trial?
Want to test out Satellite TV? Find a local dealer in the phone book and visit their showroom or find a friend with the service.

DTV just told me they have a 30 day period as well.
AFAIK they don't have one either.
