HD DVR question

1445 Views 25 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  curt8403
I originally signed up for the HD choice plus package. The installer comes out and doesnt install the HD Dish but gives me the HD DVR. Supervisors comes out and says HD probably wont work and i should switch the a standard DVR. Heres my questions.

If i downgrade to the Choice Package with a standard DVR how much will i save?

I will move eventually and want to install the HD dish and get the HD DVR back, how much will i have to pay in order to switch my receiver?

Im just trying to figure out here if I should just keep the HD DVR because i am guessing i will eventually have to pay to get it anyway, or do you think when i actually upgrade to the HD Dish they will throw in the HD DVR?

I would keep the HD DVR and have them come back out and install the CORRECT dish! HD is really the way to go!

1. you will save 9.99 over the same package with HD.
2. HD dishes do not cost. they are included in the cost of getting the HD rcvr. cost for HD DVR would be 320 plus tax. if you got an hd dvr FROM THE INSTALLER, was it ordered that way?

already tried that and the supervisor said no, which i dont believe them but frankly im sick of having them come out and telling me a different thing everytime. The last guy was the head supervisor, or so they say at Mastec. I had a good convo with him and i think he was the first person telling me the truth since he could back everything he said up. So as much as i want HD right now, it doesnt look like i can have it.
If you have an HDTV you'll want the HD service.

Get them to install the proper dish.

If they will not, or can't due to LOS, get HD cable. Don't be strong-armed into SD only service.

Unless it is due to a loss of sight, I would call D* and discuss the issue with them - they should get someone out to install the proper dish. You might also get something for your troubles.

Yeah my original order was to have 1 standard receiver and 1 hd dvr. They were supposed to install the HD dish, but didnt and now i am told the HD dish wont work and thats why they installed a standard dish. So currently i have 2 receivers 1 standard dvr in my room and 1 HD DVR in my living room.

You fail to say WHY you can't have it. What was his claim? Trees? Houses blocking LOS? The only reason why you can't have it is LOS issues but what is it?

Did they say why it won't work? I am guessing either Line of Sight, which will affect SD as well or lazy installer

The supervisor is calling it loss of sight for the HD Dish. The Dish i have now works perfect, located next to a bunch of trees and i could see where the HD Dish could be some problems with the trees, since it would have to change directions and point directly into the bushes/trees.
With the Slimline 3 now theoretically being available LOS issues should be pretty uncommon. I'd push the issue for what you originally where suppose to get. If there truly is a LOS issue they shouldn't have done any install at all.

www.dishpointer.com will show you what LOS would be like.

my bad, yeah the supervisor said because of some of the trees and bushes in my area that HD wouldnt work. The dish i have right now works great, havent had any issues in the week i have had it. I have heard a lot of different things on the HD dish and frankly i dont know what to believe right now, but i could see where LOS could be an issue if the dish were bigger and did point a little big further to the right than its current location.

SD dish and HD dish point the same direction. My HD dish points right at a huge tree (about 20 feet away) and works perfectly. Did they try an HD dish or just not even try?

he probably thinks he needs 119 and 110. that is no longer the case.

Some installers do not know that yet. call the installers and ask about a 3 lnb KA KU.

otherwise he is trying to hork you out of HD.

Well, it depends on what bird the Atlanta, GA locals are coming off from. It may still need 110 or 119 for locals.

I believe the supervisor told me my dish currently points at 225 and in order for me to get HD i would need it to point 240. At 240 it would point directly into a bush and a few trees.

Dont quote me on the numbers those were just what popped off the top of my head, but i know he said it was fairly close to those.

Honestly i have heard so many things its unreal.

the new dish points at the exact same direction as the old dish. he is for sure thinking of the old 5 LNB dish

Also, thinking back to my convo with the supervisor, i believe he mentioned something about using 2 dishes for my location and that was a reason it didnt work. Like i said before dont quote me on this, but i am almost positive he said something like that. Is there any truth to what he said?

Side note, thanks for all the tips from everyone, i am clueless to this stuff so i really appreciate all the tips and pointers.

So, you must be getting Atlanta, GA locals off one of the two birds towards the west. Maybe with a little luck, you might be able to get the slimline 3 (or whatever they're called) and just go OTA for locals.
