The recent problem with 0x5cd has caused me to question the exact functionality of the DVR when native is set off and resolutions are limited to 1080p.

Various people have talked about using the DVR to up convert the signal and limiting the output to 1080p by only selecting 1080p in the resolution setup (on the DVR) and turning native off.

However, it appears that the HDMI handshake problems occurs when the DVR attempts to walk up the resolution to the receiver and there is a mis-match between the handshake and the actual signal. Can output resolutions be limited in the DVR, or does it attempt multiple syncs no matter what the settings?

If anyone knows, it would help me understand what is going on with 0x5cd.

THANKS....

The only 1080p output [regardless of settings] is when the program is 1080p/24.
The receivers output 1080i for everything else, even without it being selected.
OK. But it appears I am still seeing the full range of resolutions being output even with only 1080i and 1080p selected. Are we sure it works as advertised, or is this a bug?

When my AVR fails handshake, it thinks it is getting a 480p signal. I do not have either 480 or the 720 resolution box checked in the DVR.

I use native on with all resolutions and the HDMI runs straight to the TV.
I have tested the output with only 1080p selected, so that is how it worked when I did.

Since the AVRs are having issues, it might be worth a baseline test running straight to the TV. Then you'll know

The AVR scaler can change the output signal to whatever it wants to. Most people use it to up convert but it appears yours down converts when it stops understanding what it's getting.

If you want to test it just do this:

Create the error you're posting about. Note the TV resolution as provided by the TV. Then plug the DIRECTV receiver straight into the TV. You haven't changed the format so it should display at the resolution the box is set to as per the led on the front of the box.

Just out of curiosity have you gone into your Yamaha's Video menu and turned off processing?

It really just sounds like the scaler in the AVR is either fighting with the source or not recognizing. So that means either forcing the AVR to control it all or remove it all would resolve it.

I am using the information function of the AVR to see the resolution it is seeing out of the DVR. Even when I get a good handshake and the AVR can up convert to 1080p, the information on the video signal shows it is up converting a 720p signal to 1080p for output. When the handshake fails and the GUIs are at the wrong resolution the TV is seeing a 720p signal (which I think is a native mode pass through in the AVR) but the AVR is showing it is up-converting a 480p signal. Totally confusing since neither the 480 or 720 resolutions are checked on the DVR.

I am trying to resolve multi sources of info on the forum that suggests the DVR only outputs based on the resolution check boxes. I don't think this is the case.

The DVR does only output in what is selected. Your AVR is listening for something and not getting it or understanding it. So then it "up converts" the signal as you've asked it to. However it's going to be all jacked up because it's trying to take a 1080 picture it thinks is 720 or 480 and make it 1080. This is why stuff is all over the place.

I have a Hitachi 42HDT51, and since 0x5cd, it will not show the output from my HR22 properly. On initial startup of the box after a reset, the image shows fine, but once it goes to live TV and regular menus from the DVR, the image acts as if there is a sync or handshake issue. When I change resolutions using the button on the box or the "format" button on the remote, it will change how the image is garbled (multiple repeats of the image squashed together horizontally, but with black lines interspersed, totally black, etc...). The only recognizable image comes when set for 480p (but colors are off and it is as if the image is overscanned), then when I try different resolutions through the setup menu, it seems to have handshake issues, and won't return to being viewable, even though it thinks it's going back to 480p. Has always worked fine up until this SW. I can reproduce this with other HR22s from elsewhere in my house. Phone reps are baffled and not really helpful, and insist that they have not heard anything at all about this issue. Really making me think of switching to cable after 10 years of DTV.
