HD DVR Still Fried...Nobody Else W/ Same Issue

My HD DVR is now on day 2 of being totally mucked up.

A RBR does nothing...it just continually gets stuck at the step 1 of step 2 set up point...have given it up to 45 minutes on that screen before resetting.

A unplugging from the wall DOES bring the TV back, but only for a few minutes before it locks up again and freezes. Further, when it does come on for a few minutes, the remote/buttons are not functional, so I can't even do a reformat.

A call to the drillrods a DirecTv got no where. Call rep said we will escalate it and I am supposed to let them know if it still does not work tomorrow???? Are you F'ing kidding me...that is there response??? Basically they have no answer and I am supposed to be the one to call back and let them know.

I'd suggest to call back and speak with another "drillrod". Repeat till you get someone who will help.
How long did you leave it unplugged? usualy a 15 minute unplug is what is needed..
OK, I will try 15 and report back, but hopes are not too high...
Have you tried disconnecting the ethernet cable before rebooting?

Don't reconnect the ethernet cable again until the dvr is stable.
If leaving it unplugged for ~15 minutes doesn't resolve your issue, there are a couple of other things you could try...

1. You can try forcing a software download. Press Menu>Parental Fav's & Setup>System Setup>Reset>Restart Receiver. The lights on the front panel will shut off after several seconds. When they come back on... Press "02468" on your remote control pretty quickly. This will just force the receiver to redownload its software.

2. You can try a "Reset Everything". Be aware, this will erase all recordings, settings, favorites lists, etc... but it's at least worth a shot before you have the receiver swapped out. Press Menu>Parental Fav's & Setup>System Setup>Reset>Reset Everything.

3. You could try formatting the hard drive... This will also erase all of your settings and recordings... You can do this by rebooting the receiver... and as it reboots, press and hold the down arrow and the record button at the same time on the front panel (not on the remote)... when the record light changes to red you can let go of the buttons....

Good luck and keep up posted!

When it boots back up successfully after the 15 minutes, you may want to do a menu reset at that time as well
Thanks for the updates about waiting 15 minutes unplugged and pulling the network cable.

For the last few days, I have been operating with one tuner on my HR20-700. (since the outage) Directv wanted to send me another receiver but I read this issue and tried that and voila, back to two tuner recording.

I had done regular red button resets and unplugging the power, but it never came up clean after the recent issues.

Thanks to all for the information!

Are you saying that you are leaving the ethernet cable unplugged?

It sounds like you had the same issue we're discussing here...

I'm currently trying the re-download of software suggested by AirRocker. I already have tried the other things.

Are you saying that leaving it disconnected for 15 minutes did the trick though? Perhaps I need to leave it unplugged longer. Seems unlikely; what else had you tried before that worked??
Thanks for the help guys. Unfortunately - none of your ideas work...the POS is simply not functioning anymore.

I went to Best Buy and got a new HR22 - took 15 minutes to set up and have been watching TV for the past hour with no issues.

I will try my luck trying to get a credit of some sort from D* - I wasnt going to bed again and wake up unable to let my 3 yr old watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse again. Its like crack/cocaine to that kid...

Prior to this, I had unplugged it briefly and restarted, as well as restarted via the red button. I ran the info tests etc... but only one tuner worked even though the device detected both tuners.

After the advice above, I unplugged the ethernet cable, then turned the HR20 off for 15 minutes. I then turned it back on and everything worked right. After that, I plugged the ethernet cable back in and everything still worked right + VOD functioned as expected.
