I tried to add the hd extra pack on dtv's website and they told me I would have to change my package in order to get it. I have Total Choice Plus. I don't know whether to change or not. Is the old total choice plus better than the comparable package now? Thanks.

They'll make you trade out of Total Choice Plus for any move you make to your programming now. If you add HBO or anything like that. So if you ever make any changes, you'll have to trade out into the comparable package. For me that was Plus HD DVR. It was perfectly comparable but (of course) $2 or 3 more. I think all of the comparable packages involve the same small increase in price.

Don't change...just call customer service and ask for them to add HD Extra without losing your grandfathered package. Changing your base package to the current equivalent (Choice Extra) will net you the same channels basically for $3/month more.

They'll do that for you?

Yes, in most cases if you call you can keep the grandfathered status, just make sure you say it very clearly you want to keep it...cause once it is changed they cannot physically let you go back (the system supposedly does not allow it).

I added HD Access and HD Extra to my grandfathered TC+

I've been with Directv for 11+ years, and it's always nice that they keep you into a grandfathered package. But, quite frankly, unless you've got a lot of time on your hands just move to the new package. Playing phone call in games when ever you want to make a change is really kind of lame. Sorry if I offended anyone.

I have TC and added the HD package through a CSR with no problem.
