The 622 is rated for about 30 hours of HD recording. Is the file size constant for all HD programs so 1 hour of HDNet will be the same size file as 1 hour of ZOOM? Or does MPEG4 w/Lite take up less file space? Also if deferent sizes are the files recorded with VBR?

File sizes vary quite a bit. I don't know the exact space for each file. The 622 displays how much HD recording time is left. So when I delete programs, it is easy to figure out how big each file is relative to 1 hr of OTA HD content.

1 hr OTA HD ~ 1 hr
1 hr SAT HD MP2 ~ 1 hr
1 hr SAT HD MP4 ~ 45 min
1 hr SAT SD MP2 ~ 10 min

These are just rough numbers. As you mentioned above, each channel, and each program can have different compression.

And even if the bitrates and compression settings are the same for two channels... each program is different because some content compresses more than others.

Lots of solid colors over larger areas of the screen will compress better than an image with non-solid colors or lots of detail all over the screen, for example.
