In our local thread over at AVS a question got me wondering who pays for the bandwidth to get the signal from the LRF to the uplink facility.

I figured someone over here might know.

Definitely NOT the broadcaster/station.

I work at a station and Comcast installed singlemode fiber to our facility. We didn't pay for anything, as it should be.

I also happened to be working in engineering one day and found a bunch of paperwork one of the engineers was working on from Dish and DirecTV concerning the 2009 digital changeover to ensure our feed wasn't interrupted at the changeover. I read it and it turns out the LRF for both Dish, Comcast, AND D* are all at the same place.

Based on this information, I would imagine that Dish and DirecTV share the cost of the facility and perhaps the uplink fees.

As Directv and Dish transition to using digital feeds of the local stations, I suspect they will use common feeds for both HD and SD (they have separate LRFs in some areas according to that list).

I think the real answer is DirecTV's customers do.
