HD Local + Dish + Time Warner Cable Question

Hi everyone,

I'm in Los Angeles and currently have the Time Warner Broadcast Basic cable service. I've been able to get clear QAM local channels in HD with this setup.

Recently I added the Dish Absolute + DVR + Local. But the problem is that the Dish Locals only gives me HD reception for CBS, NBC, ABC, & KTTV. For a couple of local channels (KTLA - channel 5 ; KCAL - channel 9) I'm only getting SD from Dish.

I was wondering if it's possible to connect my Time Warner cable to the Dish 722 DVR/Receiver and pick up the clear QAM for KTLA + KCAL? I would love to be able to use the DVR for KCAL (channel 9) for Dodgers baseball games in HD.

I see that in the back of the 722 there's an input for "OTA Antenna In." I tried connecting my Time Warner coax cable into that jack but am not sure how to proceed from there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Never had satellite or DVR service before so feeling slightly lost. Thanks!

Hi... unfortunately there is no QAM tuner in the Dish receiver so it isn't possible to feed the clear cable channels to the Dish DVR.
ahh ok. If I connect an OTA antenna to the Dish 722 will that be better?

Thanks for the help HDMe
Yes, connect an OTA antenna, go to the local channel thing in the menu do a scan then you can add whichever ones you want.
Or maybe if your TV has a clear QAM tuner. COnnect it to the cable, and the 722 to an OTA antenna.
Thanks a lot for the help guys.

My TV does have a QAM tuner. Right now the TW cable is going to my tv set directly. But I was hoping to be able to use the DVR features for those channels. Looks like I won't be able to do that with the existing equipment.

But if I connect an OTA antenna and then scan/add the channels will I be able to record/pause/forward/etc with the 722?
An OTA antenna works just fine, and any digital channels you receive can be recorded by the Dish DVR just like the satellite channels. You will need to subscribe to Dish provided locals in order to get the episode guide data, and it is possible that some sub-channels might not have EPG data but most of them should be fine and certainly most of the major networks.
Thanks again for the great responses!

Heading over to antennaweb now to find the right antenna :p
