HD questions from a newbie!

Hello, I've just finished with Dish Customer Service ordering an upgrade of my SD setup to HD with the Platinum Pak. Because of language differences, a few things weren't 100% clear to me:

- I've ordered the ViP622 and will have it connected to only 1 TV (and the phone line). With this receiver will it be possible for me to watch 1 recorded program while recording 2 more? If there is no problem, what happens if the 2 programs I'm recording are HD and the recording I'm watching is also HD . . . any problem?

- There is absolutely no mention of Cinemax on any of the Dish pages. With my SD "Everything" package, I have 5 Cinemax channels . . . will these still be available with the Platinum Pak?

Neither of these was deal killers, which is why I went ahead and set up the installation.

Thanks, Bill

The ViP622 has two satellite tuners and one off-air tuner, and you can watch and record any combination of those three tuners. So yes, you can watch a recorded program while recording two more.

I have Platinum HD, and I get the same 5 SD Cinemax channels that you're getting now. No Cinemax HD.
If you connect OTA (off-air), you will be able to view 1 recorded HD program, while recording 3 other HD programs.
Thanks for the information guys! I just thought of one more question - how many runs of coax will the installer need to reach from the dish(es) to the receiver?

The installer will need one RG6. You may want an additional cable for OTA if available to you.

One run of RG-6 cable for a dual tuner receiver . . . how do they do that? Even my dual tuner 721 took 2 runs of coax.

FWIW, I will not be connecting the OTA tuner - I never watch network programming.

The 721 is also capable of single cable operation, but it requires a DishPro Plus switch like the DPP44 or the DPP Twin LNB. Your ViP622 setup should come with some sort of DPP device.

I was going to re-work the place where the cable comes into the house (through 8" adobe brick), but since I have 2 runs of RG-6 coming in from the satellite dish and since only 1 cable will be needed for the ViP622, my job has been greatly simplified! Thanks for the information . . . :)

A couple of more questions:

- I understand that I MUST have the 622 hooked to a phone line, and even though I will NEVER use the line for any personal reasons I understand their reasoning. But I was wondering if Dish will ever be calling into the 622, or if it is used for outgoing calls only? FWIW, I'd be very put out if they call at 2AM just to verify my setup!!

- This has nothing to do with the 622 . . . I've noticed that the Dish magazine is now listing only 2 of the 5 Cinemax stations, and that they are NOT showing the 5 Cinemax stations on their web site as being available to subscribers. Is Dish ending their association with Cinemax? Or could it be that Cinemax is going out of business?

Thanks, Bill

Pretty sure Dish does not call your receiver.

The Cinemax issue has been talked about before. Just do a search and you'll find plenty.

I had searched before posting my question, but I searched the wrong forum. When I searched ALL forums I found plenty of hits. So far though, everything I've read has been speculation about what's going on with Dish/Cinemax - nobody seems to have any solid facts. :(

That's what the "BS" in DBSTalk is all about, and what makes this such a special place to visit!
