Hi.


The house I purchased currently has a very old satellite with I think 1 cable coming into my equipment room into some kind of splitter.

I am wondering if there is a way to replace that satellite with a new satellite capable of doing all the HD channels but without requiring new coaxial cables having to be run into the house.

Do you know if such a satellite exist for HD or do they all require additional cables to be run inside the house?

You would need a Slimline dish for HD. Most of them have 4 outputs and can support up to 4 tuners (one cable each). To get by with a single cable for more than one tuner, you would need a single wire multiswitch (SWM). There are two alternatives--

Slimline dishes with a LNB assembly containing an 8-channel SWM are starting to be used. Normally these appear to be reserved for those with 5-8 tuners and they may not be available in all areas yet. These are not yet available at retail locations, but the LNB assemblies have shown up on eBay and can easily be subsituted for the standard assembly.

An external SWM8 assembly can be used with the normal Slimline dish (and can be mounted outside the house). These are mostly going to multi-family dwelling installations, but you can purchase one from several sources, such as Solid Signal.

So these options would allow a single cable to go into a splitter and distributed to multiple receivers?

They normally expect an individual cable to be run to ever room in the house from the satellite dish? That would be pretty messy.

SWM is just for that...
and yes the standard has been a cable for every tuner.. (2 for dvrs)
